  1. Normally I take videos with my phone, drop them into DropBox to get to my PC and then import them into whatever I am using (Vegas MS today)
File appears normally as this ... Image

Now today files arrive and appear as Image

Which the PC thinks is Audio only.

If I double-click with default player as WMP, it played audio only .... I changed the default player to SPLASH and if I double click I do get audio & video.

However, if I import it into VMS it arrives as audio-only not video
Also tried several converters - non are happy with the files.

Just as part of picture - files play happily on teh phone (Android)

Sample file attached - welcome advice.

  2. Can you post a sample of a clip that worked previously for comparison?

I suspect you have switched from AVC to HEVC encoding. But without a comparison file that is a wild guess. Your clip plays fine in MPC-HC.

  3. Your sample videostream is hevc encoded (h265), so wmp will not play it.

  4. WMP (support ended January 2020) doesn't support this video format (codec), I think. This file plays fine with various current players which I tried here.

  5. Interesting I imported to Vegas .... doesn't play there either (just audio)
Been taking video clips with my phone for years - wonder what has changed.

As requested comparison file from the same device ...

    On your phone:

    Camera>Settings cog>scroll down to "Videos"

In "Advanced Video Options", turn off the "Reduce File Size", which is a weird way of saying "turn off HEVC format". Turning that off will mean your videos will be recorded in AVC/H264, which is a less-compressed format. File sizes will be bigger but easier for editing.

It is odd that even Microsoft Films and TV won't play that HEVC (it plays OK in VLC Player). There's definitely something odd about that HEVC file.

The HEVCs from my S21 play OK in Films and TV.

The file played on WMP for me, but it might be because I have LAV filters installed

MS has an HEVC decoder available on the MS Store, IIRC.
But, perhaps it only works with Media Foundation architecture and not Dshow or VCM/VFW (probably). Pretty sure WMP uses Dshow.

The 'Reduce file size was not selected' unless there is a short cut route to it I enabled for those vids by accident.
To be sure I used the 'reset' settings option.
Did a test video 'seems' correct to me ... medi infor file attached

Assume I should stop using WMP then .... only used it as it was often the 'default' advice here.

I have Splash as default, is anything more suitable (VLC which I used a lot cannot play those files)

I just tried VLC it won't play those files - HEVC coded .... (at least the version I have 3.0.18 Vetenari)

Splash play them OK ...... as you say may be something 'odd' as SonyVegas MS can't use them either.

Rick, (How you doing buddy ?)

Are you saying that VLC does not play that sample 'Pergola.mp4' ?

If so, I find that strange. I am using the same version of VLC and, unless your system details are not updated, the same Win7-64. And it plays just fine.

It also 'played' the HEVC sample. Not great but that is down to my memory-crippled system

This is a normal h264 video

The only problem I can see here is the high profile level (Main@L4).

You can try to lower this level a bit, e.g. to 3.1.
You can do this with clever-FFmpeg-GUI, portable, no installation, without recoding.

Load your mp4, click main, click change p-level, set new level to 3.1 and click change level.

When done, you will find your new mp4 file in the target folder.

Hi ..... No VLC plays pergola .... it was the 'one in OP .... 20230131_144050.mp4' that it won't play.
