Does anyone out there think that this will be a possibility in the future. As DVD writers are still limited due to the 4.7GB limit. Or is this never likely to happen due to the research in blue ray technology, which I believe can fit around 18GB on one layer.

Dual layer DVDs are manufactured, not burned. Various companies looked into dual-layer writeables, but the obstacles to overcome were too great (with the current technology) so development was abandoned. Don't look for dual-layer recorders anytime soon.
