I'm going to be building a WinXP-based PC that'll be built around the ATI AIW 9800 Pro. So far, I've got these components laid out for it
OS: Windows XP Professional SP2
CPU: Intel Core 2 Duo E7600
Motherboard: ASRock 775i65G R3.0
HDD: Seagate BarraCuda 3.5" 2TB
Graphics Card: ATI All in Wonder 9800 Pro
Sound Card: Turtle Beach Santa Cruz
PSU: Corsair SF450 Gold
The only thing left to choose from is the RAM. Since the motherboard only supports up to DDR 400 2GB, would a modern make/model be a good choice or would I need one from the 2000s?

For this mainboard, it has to be DDR2 RAM. The remaining specs of the RAM are backwards compatible (for example, the mainboard may run the RAM at a lower clock speed than what it may be able to do).
A modern one would not work because they are all DDR4 and DDR3. -
Are you sure? The specs here only says DDR400

So after some research I found that there were in fact a few oddball mainboards that would use DDR RAM despite having a 775 socket CPU (unusual and outdated for that time!). So yeah, you need DDR RAM.
