Yes, or better upload a sample of the source as we won't see from MediaInfo whether the source has any (possibly odd) borders or is otherwise borked.
Also, it's not clear whether the taget should be an NTSC or a PAL DVD.
It's a bit pointless to give advice based on too many speculations.

Yes, or better upload a sample of the source as we won't see from MediaInfo whether the source has any (possibly odd) borders or is otherwise borked.
Also, it's not clear whether the taget should be an NTSC or a PAL DVD.
It's a bit pointless to give advice based on too many speculations.

Thats so true. I am sorry for creating confusion, as I do not know which would be the better target, PAL och NTSC, from the current source. As 480p is closest to NTSC I felt that being the natural choice.

How the borders appeared in the end I have no clue, unfortunately. As trying to change the resolution now only seem to worsen the problem...

Since the source is 24 fps I would recommend PAL (25 fps).
In any case (whether PAL 25 fps or NTSC 29.97 fps) the audio stream must also be adjusted, otherwise it will be out of sync.
Your movie is 1.85:1 DAR, embedded in a 16:9 frame.

You can do the whole conversion with clever FFmpeg-GUI.

First you need to find the correct crop.
Load your video, click main, click encode video stream, click crop detect, click 2 to 3 times on next crop.
Crop values should be like in picture below.
Check with Preview, click OK, done, if everything fits.

Set everything as shown in the picture below, leaving all other settings as they are.
Click on encode.

Then click encode audio stream, select a desired AC3 audio stream (I'll take stream 1 as an example here), click select this stream, click go to the encoder, set everything as shown in the picture and click encode.

Then click multiplex, the newly created video and audio stream are displayed in green. Check that only the two green streams are checked, the others must be deselected, set mpg as container and click on multiplex.

All done.
You will find your newly created DVD compatible video in the destination folder.

It seems that your test.avi of post#30 is an XviD re-encoded version of your x264-encoded .mkv 'original' of which you posted the MediaInfo.
But anyway, it serves the purpose, so:

- The content is an 1.85:1 movie of 24.0fps progressive film, in a square pixel 1280x720 frame. Hence the 14 pixels bars top and bottom
- The format is PAL or NTSC agnositc (irrelevant), so whether you want to make a PAL or NTSC DVD should be governed by the region you are living in or by the region you want to ship your DVD disc to (e.g. to family members living in a PAL or NTSC country) Google what applies in your case.
- If you want to build a NTSC DVD, the procedure as proposed in post#24 would apply.
- If you want to build a PAL DVD, the procedure would be: Resize to 720x576, Speed-up video and audio from 24fps to 25fps, author as 16:9 PAL DVD and burn the disc.

Note that all DVDs are non-square pixels (anamorphic). The DVD player will however scale the picture for an undistorted view on TV.

There are tools and GUIs to support the conversion process, like AVStoDVD (AVS2DVD) which may be closest to what you need for authoring an burning a DVD, either PAL or NTSC, supporting several audio tracks and subtitles and custom menus. There are other GUIs like DVDStyler or clever FFMpeg-GUI etc. you may want to try too.

Edit:
Attached for example the DVD file structures for NTSC and PAL with a simple menu, created with DVDStyler from your 'test.avi' of post#30.
(I just quickly tried it, out of curiousity. I hardly ever author any DVD's these days).

Finally got to remember to reply here. The video has been converted and is working fine now. Took a while to make it become satisfactory but now it works.
