  1. My old files, pre -the start of this problem, are still playing fine. Isn't diskdigger just for deleted files?

  2. Flash memory (as used in USB sticks) does 'wear out'. I'd recommend backing up anything of value (I'd recommend that anyway, regardless of the condition of your USB stick).

It would be interesting to see if there is a difference in the hash value calculated for a file after it has been copied to your USB stick, that would be surprising, so interesting to know. After copying the file to USB stick, in powershell, you could try something like (assuming 'E' is the drive letter for your USB stick):
    HTML Code:
    get-filehash c:\myvideofile.mp4
    get-filehash e:\myvideofile.mp4
Actually, it would be interesting to see if the hash value changes after running the command a few times (reading the file contents a few times), it really shouldn't.

  4. Have been downloading successfully over the weekend and I'd like to close this thread when I figure out how to. It seems the problem WAS the usb stick after all as simply changing to a new one has solved ALL the foregoing problems

Thanks to @helloImNoob and @bamboobali for the advice and to @[ss]vegeta for switching me on to a new download method. Hopefully @[ss]vegeta has recovered from my background screens
