pioneer DV-3052V region free: SKIPPING, 'out of region' error

worked fine out of the box playing all my USA and European DVDs, but now it skips when playing my USA DVDs and won't play my European DVDs at all.

I searched the forums, nothing I found applied to my situation.

I opened the case, cleaned the lens, verified that the white lithium grease was not dried out - it's moist and slick. The drawer cycles perfectly,

It's 3 years old; I've played maybe 50 DVDs in that time; it worked fine when I put it away 16 months ago.

Anything I can try to make it work perfectly again ?

Someone told me that the lens diode may be on the way out but could be tweaked to bring it back for a little while. Are the two screws pictured what I should adjust and which direction do I turn them and how far ?
