By this I mean, a video downloader minus all the fluff and BS like editing, re-encoding, cataloging, etc.
Just a dedicated video downloader, designed at engineering level, say, from GitHub, that has the capability to download any video on the Internet, most importantly the more difficult formats such as BLOB, HLS, etc.
Just curious.
Try StreamFab Downloader and download from Netflix, Amazon, Youtube! Or Try DVDFab and copy Blu-rays! or rip iTunes movies!

The people running these streaming sites don't like users downloading their stuff. So they're constantly changing protocols, making existing stream downloaders obsolete until they figure it out and update the program. So IMO the answer is no, it's a constantly moving targer.

Hi Chas
I've just joined, and asked a question (in Genaral section) whether clip downloaders exist
I then found your post.
It got me thinking about how much is lost, if using the screen record method.
I recently downloaded a video off YouTube, at max available resolution.
It was heavily combed, but it tidied up reasonably well in Handbrake.
You've got me thinking.
How have you found the difference, between a YT source file, and a screen record?

Screen Record v File - both Handbraked
Today I screen recorded the video that I had previously downloaded at max available size:
1920x1080 25FPS 9:55 mins MP4 328MB
Handbraked
Interlace, Deinterlace at default
NLMeans at Ultralight
Lapsharp at Light
Constant Quality at 20
Encoder H.264 (x264)
fps 60 at Peak Frame Rate
The rest I left at default.
The Handbraked video is 462MB and a big improvement (combs are gone).
Full Screen record of the same video on YT by OBS
60FPS
MP4 @ Large file
Quality at 100
Resulting File size = 632MB
The Screen file was Handbraked using the same settings as above.
Resulting file size = 476MB
I test viewed both processed files at 0.25 speed.
What surprised me, was that the HB screen file was still combed during movement
Whereas the HB original file, was not combed.
Thoughts
On reflection; I'm guessing that the screen recording, records the combs as video.
Consequently HB cannot remove them.
However, this was due to the low quality of the original video on YT.
If the the video had been of higher quality, then the resultant files would likely have been very similar.
Either way, I'm pleased to have carried out the test, as I have learned something.

Screen recording is always the last resort when it comes to quality. To put it in simple words, would you rather own an original painting or a digital photograph of it? the answer is clear.

True!
However, it is an interesting concept for downloading video clips.
I asked a question on the forum, if a video clip downloader existed.
Clipconverter used to serve this purpose, but it appears to be broken.
As yet no one has suggested any software, so looking at the screen record was a worthwhile test.
The only problem is that the clips that I want to use on this project, are to be in slow motion, only last a few seconds, and are from different longish vids.
So, a clip downloader would be ideal, if I can find one.
I may have to download all the downloader software, and examine each of them, to see if any offer this option.
What a bind!
