  1. I used to find these but not any more. I would like to video some film and would like to keep it permanently. In the old days we had VCRs but that is obsolete. Are their any permanent recording methods. I don't want to fill up the HDD on my Sky box.

    Thanks. Desmond.

Well there are still a few dvd-recorders made by Panasonic but these will not help you.

The issue is only partially the recorder since that will only record on to dvd in SD and your $ky recording could well be HD. More critical is that later $ky boxes have removed all SD outputs typically scart and one is only left with HDMI. Now theoretically you could acquire a HDMI connected capture device to 'record' from your box on to a PC but you then come across yet another issue >> HDCP (copy-protection). Yes there are devices can can circumvent that but ones that used to work may no longer do so even if they look the same on the outside and have the same model name etc.

So your only option is to record to the HDD of the box but even then I wonder if that is possible with some more recent films again for anti-copy resaons.

So the cheapest option really is to buy the dvd (assuming it is available)

  3. Maybe I'm misreading the question, but Desmond spoke of 'film' as if it were maybe 8mm home movies or the like. If it's not "a" film (DVD or VHS), then the big issue is turning his film into video. There used to be all manner of band-aid 'telecines' or 'film chains' that would let you point your movie projector into a box with a video camera, but I haven't seen those for years. Once you have an MP4 file (or whatever), authoring and burning a DVD on your computer is the easy part. Perhaps Desmond can clarify his need.

No. You did misread. A Sky Box is a combined Sat receiver/DVR. Think of 'a film' as the movie transmitted on one of their channels. There are no ways to record from external sources to a Sky Box. The 'plan' would be to record the transmission on the channel to the HDD in the Sky Box but then transfer that recording to a dvd via the dvd-recorder.

  5. Ah, so that's a Sky Box. A good example of "Two nations separated by a common language."

  6. What I meant was the output from the Sky-Q box to the TV is HDMI. I thought of daisy chain it to the TV.
