  1. I am using AviUtil now. It works but is tedious. For one, there is no ability to cross-fade audio. I do need the multiple layers it has. I mostly only do simple edits. Cut-n-paste, cross-fade and fade-to-black. When I try to split the audio from the video, it never gets the timings right.
Is one of the free ones on here better now?

  2. resolve (free version) , shotcut are fairly good and better than aviutl in terms of traditional editing .

Aviutl has more quirky effects and user plugins

KdenLive is open source and free.. and it's a great software for multitrack audio (and video) editing. It's very easy to cross-fade (in/out) video and audio tracks directly from the timeline.. in a "visual way", simply dragging up and down some "points" where every fade should start/end. And if you need more advanced editing there is a lot more the software offers you.. Kden is quite more powerful and versatile than its ..cousin.. "Shotcut".
