  1. I am after a subtitle editor that is easy to use? I've tried Subtitle Edit but it insists on doing things I don't want to do, such as changing the layout of the original text as well as the spelling!

All I want to do is import some subtitles from one video to a slightly extended one, change the starting point of some of the text, and occasionally let it appear a bit longer?

For Subtitle Edit: you probably have some options enabled for auto-correction/formatting.

Anyway.. i use KaiNote : it's also free and has very powerful tools, especially for re-sync tasks, but at the beginning you have to spend quite some time to familiarize yourself with its complex interface full of buttons and understand how those tools work.

It's not clear whether your subtitles are text- or image-based. For text, see krykmoon's post.

Should your subtitles be image-based SUP or XML/PNG, SE has the option to perform time-based edits (like syncing) without touching the original images.
