  1. I usually download highly compressed movies (mp4/mkv mostly), fitting them - with convertxtodvd - on a DVD5 which holds up about 5 or 6 flicks (sometimes 7) so I can watch them on my portable dvd player for the mini TV set I got. Since the quality is low beforehand, can I squeeze as many movies as possible by keeping the initial source rate? I don't wanna be using dvdshrink in addition. Is there a standalone program for this?

  2. You can put as much video as you want on a DVD, just use lower and lower bitrates. But the lower the bitrate the worse it's going to look. Keep in mind that MPEG 2 compression is far less efficient than what's typically found in mp4 or mkv (avc or hevc). Seven movies on a DVD is what? Ten hours? It must already look like crap.

Your getting as much quality as you can with jamming that many vids on a DVD, ConvertXtoDVD is as good as it's going to get for ease of use. You're MP4 videos have lower bitrates because they can, mpeg2 (VOB) isn't as efficient at compressing without artifacts.
It's not important the problem be solved, only that the blame for the mistake is assigned correctly
