So fast, so great, thank you.

Hi Autodidact and thanks for the new version...
Unfortunately this new release does not take over settings from the previous version on my Win7 system. I use the 32-bit version, using the mkvtoolnix-gui.ini file from the previous version 78.0 does not work, the ini file is not recognized.
Back to version 78.0 for now, I hope this can be fixed...
Cheers

Hi Manolito.
Are you running from an installed or a portable location? That is usually what causes problems with the mkvtoolnix-gui.ini as there shouldn't be any fundamental difference to the file format between versions. If you can tell me the steps you took to install the new version I can try to reproduce the problem. Under Help -> System Information and under the Paths heading it will say what kind of installation it detects.
I have made an installer if you'd like to try that. It will prompt for elevated permissions to install to the Program Files directory. Of course, keep a backup copy of your ini file.PB -
I'm not having any problems with the mkvtoolnix-gui.ini file being recognized in both the 64/32 bit versions of 79. Might want to double check things.
P.S. Many thanks for your efforts autodidact, it's very much appreciated. -
Hi autodidact,
thank you for your prompt reply. It turned out that this was a false alarm, everything is working fine now...
I redownloaded the cource file, then started the previous version and opened the Settings window. Resaved the settings withoud changing anything, then deleted all MKVToolMix files except the INI file. Rebooted, extracted the new files from the current version, rebooted again, and everything worked perfectly. (As always I used the portable 32-bit version)
I tend to believe that I might have had a corrupt download last night. After launching the program last night I got a funny looking desktop, the menu to the left was all black and white. When I removed the INI file from today´s working installation, the settings were gone of course, but the menu to the left looked perfect with the correct colors.
So whatever it might have been, it is fixed now for me, a couple of test conversions came out nicely. Thanks again for your reliable and prompt releases...
Cheers

The last commits drop QT5 support, i think this is realy the end now...
-
@jpsdr
Thank you for sharing the news.
@fits79
Given the new information, future Windows 7 compatible builds are in doubt.PB -
Can't those two commits be reverted so QT5 compatibility stays in your fork?
-
@autodidact
Personnaly, i'm barely able to build following the instructions step by step.
I don't know your level skill in QT and mkvtoolnix build process, but i was asked to talk to you about this :

https://github.com/okt04175/rpcs3-qt64
https://github.com/okt04175/api-ms-win-core-synch-Win7
I have no idea how to eventualy make the mkvtoolnix build use this QT6 version instead of standard, or even more if it could work in the Mosu build structure...
My guess : at least not easy.
I've fullfiled my mission to talk to you about this.
@Vidd
I've personnaly branched a version just before these commits. I'll try to just add fixes, but it will probably not work everytime, and maybe reach a time when it's not possible. -
I took a look at that project. It is much like others that I have seen that target Windows 7 with QT6 and use a shared QT build. I am reluctant to move to that build type and also fight with QT6 compatibility. What I will do is put some effort into trying to build a static QT6 with the Windows 7 modifications and build mkvtoolnix with that. We'll see how that goes.

Oh... Thanks for this effort.
If it success (i hope), would it be possible to share a git ? -
!!TEST BUILD!!
This was built with Qt6 modified with Windows 7 compatibility patches from here:
https://github.com/crystalidea/qt6windows7
My testing shows this build works fine on Windows 8.1 but does not work on Windows 7*.
Test if you wish.
I think this concludes my Qt6 testing.
*UPDATE: To run it on Windows 7 download the support libraries below and place the files for your architecture into the MKVToolnix folder.
Thanks to ask2018 for this solution.Last edited by autodidact; 14th Jun 2025 at 15:38.

Thanks for the builds 👍
FYI this program is using Qt 6.1.3 and it's running fine on Windows 7, so maybe this can help you:

Hello autodidact and thank you for providing these MKVToolnix builds. There is a way to run your build on Win7 (I've tested 64bit version). You need to do 2 things.
1. Grab the dlls from here and put inside MKVToolnix folder - https://github.com/okt04175/api-ms-win-core-synch-Win7
2. Grab VxKex https://github.com/vxiiduu/VxKex and enable it for mkvtoolnix-gui.exe.
Now everything seems to be working fine on Win7 as well. So I think this might be good solution to continue support of older OS - Win7 included.
edit: as a portable alternative for number 2 - if you copy SHCORE.DLL and USER33.DLL from VxKex to mkvtoolnix folder it seems to be working as well and you don't need to enable VxKex
also only api-ms-win-core-synch-l1-2-0.dll seems to be needed for number 1
