When I play an HEVC encoded file using enhanced video renderer (custom presenter), the video is too bright.
When I switch to just EVR, the video looks fine (especially the blacks), but I can't use subtitles (neither internal nor external).
Here's a comparison: https://postimg.cc/gallery/562SNxC
Is there anything I can do to have BOTH the good picture quality and the subtitles? Maybe I should use a completely different renderer?

What GPU do you use?
What driver version?
Post filters list. To do so - Play video -> rightclick -> Filters -> Copy Filters to clipboard and paste it here.
Can you also add a screenshot of options -> Video (When EVR custom presenter is selected) and post it here.
I need that info to help you -
I have a GTX1080 with the latest drivers.
MPC-BE 1.5.4.4969
Filters currently loaded:
- Default DirectSound Device
- Enhanced Video Renderer (custom presenter)
- Audio Switcher
- MPC Video Decoder
- MPC Audio Decoder
- MPC Matroska Source
EVR-CP options: https://postimg.cc/QFtYTdZy
MediaInfo summary of an example file: https://pastebin.com/P6DbiqGV -
Updated MPC-BE to 1.6.1, same thing.
Brightness with madVR and MPC VR is the same as EVR CP.
Tried VLC Player and it has the "right" (?) brightness, same as MPC-BE with EVR. Also it can use subtitles.
There's something I noticed about MPC-BE, though: https://postimg.cc/gallery/nVSWg4g -
Can you please upload a short part of the file using MKVtoolnix and cut out a part? I want to test here
But for sure 16-235 vs 0-255 issue - limited range vs full range.
Every video (almost) is limited range, but needs to be converted to full range for processing. If one time it is missing then you get some issue like this.
What happens if you disable D3D11 in options > internal filters > video decoder (tab) > video decoder configuration < preferred decoder from D3D11 to DXVA2?
Did you use in both cases GPU acceleration? Try to disable DXVA internal filters just for tests. Later enable them again. -

Same goes for Hardware Acceleration (unchecked all codecs; tried with both D3D11 and DXVA2).
Another question: why don't subtitles work with MPC Renderer or EVR? -
Jeeeesus Christ. That was it. For some reason, the default range is limited in Nvidia Control Panel settings. I changed it to this and it worked. Thanks a lot!
