why is my dvb receiver creating malformed recording files when recording on usb flash drives?
My dvb receiver supports only fat32 file system and usb 2.0, it records normal files on an old usb 2.0 hard drive, on the other hand, records are malformed on any usb 2.0 flash drives. (sunplus chipset)
this is an example of the errors i get in the produced file when passing it throug TsDoctor:
Starting at packet 0000007F PCR: 00:00:00.000 (-00:00:00.000)

Ending at packet 00023706 PCR: 00:00:33.093 (00:00:37.295)
this happens almost every second and results in malformed frames and pixelation. It does not even record with usb 3.0 hdd and there is no usb 2.0 hdd in market anymore and there is no ability to buy a good dvb receiver, is there something i can do to make it work with flash drives.

Have you tried connecting a USB 3.0 HDD with power supplied by a wall outlet? USB 3.0 is backward-compatible with USB 2.0 in most cases, other than USB 3.0's ability to supply more power.

Try a better quality USB flash drive. It might be that the one you use now doesn't write data fast enough, so the data on will not be complete.

@LittleBull that's probably the case, the dvb receiver has no ram to cache on, so it depends completely on the storage device for that matter. The flash drive that works is the cheap one but it's only 16 gb and it's old.
@usually_quit I did not try the wall thing, I will try it... Edit: do you mean using this cable

If yes, which one is for power and which for data? -
No. I mean something like this:
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B082PMXPPY/
or even this:
https://www.amazon.com/Cable-Drive-Adapter-Converter-Support/dp/B07SGRBVB7/
...where the drive is powered by an adapter that plugs into mains power.
There used to be relatively small external drives from Western Digital with a power supply like those above but not anymore.
[Edit]Regarding the cable in your attachment. The Micro USB 3.0 connection plugs into an HDD or ODD. The Type-A USB 3.0 connection transmits data and the Type-A USB 2.0 provides additional power.Last edited by usually_quiet; 3rd Apr 2022 at 18:35.

Despite the cable being different from yours, can this work if I connected the power cable into a PC or any USB power source?
Edit: I feel so stupid that I did not mention the hard was external HDD
Edit2: I going to have to this cable shipped, which going to cost me literally the same price as the dvb device, I need to know is this gonna work or not first, I mean the USB 2.0 vs USB 3.0 power supply difference theory is at work here or not, sorry I got do with what I have at hand.
Edit3: the USB 3.0 external HDD malfunction is in the form of very slow response from it or not at all, could is be a power problem?Last edited by mobbdeep55; 4th Apr 2022 at 10:44.

I have heard of instances where USB 3.0 external HDDs don't work because they can't get enough power from a single USB port on a device (the drive can't spin up or the controller can't operate properly) but that is only one possible cause for the problem. So, I can't tell you for certain if the Y-cable will work or not.

Sometimes these could be transmission problems or interference. As an experiment run one of the TS files through TSDoctor or VideoRedo or ProjectX. You can get demo versions fully functional, time limited for the first 2 and ProjectX is free but very old and only handles MPEG2 files in the transmission, otherwise it is very good.

@netmas56 u did not notice that I did run it through ts doctor and the results were as above... These are not transmission problems in the way that I think you mean, I watch while recording and there is not any pixelation or any malfunction going on then the record file is damaged.

Ah yes I missed that. What is the brand and model number of your DVB receiver?

Where i live, we only got cheap generic DVBs that mostly come with a cheap chipset called sunplus as mine's (DVBS-1506TV-V1.0-OTP-S0). I have not seen a single dvb with a tradename here.

Finally i got this solved: it was really a power issue... im using my pc to supply power to the hdd, anyway when i connect the power cord directly to the pc (usb 3.0 outlet) it does not supply power to the hard, however when i used a usb 3.0 hub by connecting it to the pc then connecting the power cord to it, it worked.
Edit: the dvb has 2 usb ports, i managed to connect both the data and power cords to it and it worked.
Thank everybody for trying help and special thanks to @usually_quiet u really got this man.Last edited by mobbdeep55; 5th Apr 2022 at 23:02.
