  1. As far as I understand, FFMpeg can "hack" chapters into MP4 by using FFMETADATA, but I'm working with MOV containers (DV streams from MiniDV tapes inside), and I'm wondering what the proper method would be to insert chapters. Is there a specific software I should look for, or can FFMPEG do this?

    Thanks!

  3. I do have access to a Mac, yes, but ideally I’d prefer to work on Windows. The reason for the MOV container is because AVI doesn’t support chapters, so I intend to rewrap them. Using Scenalyzer Live for capture.

If you have access to an older PC or Mac, without regular network exposure, the ideal setup for editing chapters on MOV files would be to use QT 7 Pro.
Issue there would be how to still get a license now. Not going to suggest hacked codes, for lots of reasons, but there aren't many options. I paid for my licenses back in 2005-6 and am holding on to them for just this kind of scenario.

  5. There’s no modern equivalent? Weird. I would love to do this via command line, I’ll do the FFMETADATA thing if I have to

    With ffmpeg: https://ikyle.me/blog/2020/add-mp4-chapters-ffmpeg

I tried it with their sample chapter file and a random video (output to .MOV). It worked:
