    The player resizes the video to fit the screen width or height, then adds black borders to fill the rest of the frame.
    You are just assuming the OP's devices do that, A lot of devices need the aspect ratio flag to properly display the frame otherwise they just assumes square pixel and stretch it to whatever screen ratio the device might be, I based my reasoning on 90% of the devices which are 16:9, Until the OP specifies what kind of device he wants to view the contents on I stand correct by my suggestion in post #19.

    Of course you specify the sample aspect ratio or display aspect ratio when you encode/mux.
