A while back I was in a thrift store and by random happenstance found a VHS copy of Song Of The South, complete with a Disney label. The only thing is it shouldn't exist - to the best of my knowledge SotS was released in theaters but was never released for the home market in the US due to controversy over the subject matter, it was only released on PAL in Europe.
It was the only copy I found, it plays great.
Any theories on where this lone copy might have come from?

I am probably wrong but didn't Disney release it at some time in the US but with that 'Tar Baby' scene missing ? And later had a 'flush' of (mis-guided) conscience and pulled the entire thing.
But there is a sure way to find if you have the genuine article and not some clever copy.
