  1. I have looked at the help files for Subtitle Edit. But when I go to Adjust, I'm not able to set the start time of the whole subtitle to zero. Should be easy but I'm missing something. Each Time I go > Adjust and then change the start time box, it will not reset and save to 00:00:00.

    the start number is:

    00:00:55 > forward.

Because of this I cannot even see the beginning of the video.

Just go to synchronization/adjust all times earlier/later and set it to 55 seconds or whatever you need.
    I think,therefore i am a hamster.

I did not explain myself well.

I've made a screen shot. And I did look at Synchronize.
But what is needed is to time the two entries called Barnyard Noises Start at 00:00:06
until 00:00:12 for "Music" to display and a dialog start time of 00:00:55 secs.

So 00:00:00 to 00:00:06 Barnyard Sounds
    00:00:12 to 00:00:54 Music plays
    00:00:55: " Oh I vow "

I can fine tune the timings when I know how save them correctly.

The subtitle was given to me with this crazy edit I'm trying to fix it with my video.

For such a gross change it might be quicker to edit the source in Notepad,
change it there, and make that your new base - then do your fine tuning in the program

  6. I actually thought of this and did some samples but did it in Notepad ++ which will read an SRT file.
I'll get off the topic but will ask one last thing on it:

To set up my line numbers, will "Insert New Line" renumber everything? And if simply inserted, can I avoid
    red error messages?

I didn't think adding two inserted lines at beginning of the sub file would be a problem.

Anyway I'll try some workarounds and start by getting my exact time stamps. Elsewhere in a different project I was
able to get a line inserted and time it. It's just addition and subtraction. But the program seems to interfere
with simple things I try to do.

Yes. Even when "insert before" line 1, all will be renumbered properly.

For this case however, I think I'd first delete line 1 and 2. Next, solve the long duration issue of the "Oh, I vow..." text (now shown as line 3). Then sync all to video. Lastly, "insert before" to create the two lines 1 and 2 again, manually setting timings right.

    Hope this helps.

  8. Thanks to all for the advice.

I made a new draft copy of the file and will follow the tips as best I can. Can you give some detail on how to run Synch. I've seen the FAQ illustrations at Nikse but do you have any advice on using it?

I'd be glad to, but I don't know the exact issue you are experiencing. Aside from the problems in the first 3 lines (maybe you can just delete them for assessing the rest), can you tell what the exact matter is?

Are they all out of sync for a same period? Like, do they all show too late or too soon the same amount of time?
In that case you'll need "Synchronization --> Adjust all times (show earlier/later)".

Or does the a-sync decrease or increase when going further into videotime? In which case "Change framerate" or "Visual Sync" can help out.

A combination of the two is also possible.

Please let know what the exact problem is, I'll try to provide detailed workflow.

The first 2 lines need to be adjusted cause they show negative counts, they need to be set to 00 to start with or close to the first talking time or relevant scene.

  11. Thanks again for the help offers. As far as I know at the dialog, the timings are all fine. I may not need and I don't want to start adding or subtracting time across the whole SRT. I think those auto solutions have produced the
problems I'm correcting from others. These sorts of subs problems might be 'scanlations' or, in a previous SRT, introduced the same time for every entry and then left that way with no original. I found an original from another source-- one of the members here. But that had a couple of other problems matching to my video rather than the
    video source.

My Cyrano de Bergerac is completed. I am doing this subbing activity though it may sound like I'm just asking
a lot of questions with increased verbiage.

I don't even know how the problems of commas inserted seemingly at random added to a transcription source
happened. Or the misheard words or even worse, just dropped text-- text I found in a print edition were passed through. Proper place names in French were mangled or nonexistant. But I did accomplish the changes.
