I was wondering what type of tbc is in these decks ? the card says tbc-18 and has small spots to make adjustments with tiny screwdriver. hue ,uv offset, visc p,visc r.,int sc, chroma level, video level some of these controls are also under the flip up panel on the front of the unit.

Probably a field TBC with proc amp, I doubt it would work as a stand alone TBC for external incoming signal, it applies TBC to the tapes it reads only, at least according to online publications. What is it good for though is transferring uMatic tapes, It uses the dub connector and pulls the chroma under straight from the tape.

this is from the manual. i can confirm that it works on the pass through signals it also need to be provided with a reference signal from the source to gen lock the picture and keep it from rolling . i was told to use this setup from the guy at https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCZZ81K7l-gW_z4g2HA8mcDw as a pass through to handle the tbc needs.
edited i suppose it would be more accurate to say has to be genlocked to pass a signal through how much it "works" i cannot say. i have some signal splitters coming that should let me do tests with my lower end vcrs. the last testing i did reveled w/o the jvc tbc on the beta pass through had alot of jumping in the image which was not shown in the jvc by itself. i found a a replacement beta deck locally for 39$ which seems to not have the issue. should be able to try some tests when the signal splitters show up .Last edited by jamessoul; 17th Feb 2022 at 13:21.

It makes sense since it can handle uMatic passthrough, One nice feature it has is the DOC, However most modern VHS players and camcorders are built in DOC.
If you are not satisfied with your capture card look for an analog to SDI capture device, like the Ensemble Designs BE75, S&W TBS-800 (Grass Valley CVR-800) and other models in the series, Those have the best TBC functionality in the industry for consumer noisy sources and there is no going back to analog like consumer TBC's. Sometimes they show up online and they go for very cheap prices. Using a microwave size machine as TBC is not really convenient. -
thanks for the info delsam i will keep an eye out for any of those converters. i spent a little time researching this yesterday. found this link which was full of information. https://www.iasa-web.org/sites/default/files/publications/IASA-TC_06-C_20180603.pdf on page 111 he says this "Different playback devices can affect playback based on the way they pass the video in-
formation through the machine. Some devices, while being analogue in nature, will have
digital elements that control the way the signal is reproduced; e.g. some machines per-
form better in terms of dropouts and recovery, newer devices such as BVW series and
onwards will reduce or remove dropouts by use of an inbuilt TBC.The TBC converts
the analogue signal to digital and in the BVW range the signal is adjusted in the digital
domain, the later machines perform this process better as they have larger memory
buffer to do i also saw one of the remote controls offered the function of a freeze frame . the bulky 55 pound microwave is not bother for me as i also had some beta sp tapes to transfer and it preforms the function of a splitter which lets me view my output on my 34 inch crt in component. also in southern californium where i live there is an steady supply of these coming through e recyclers from all the old studios in the area and i can local pickup. i am happy with my card but as long as i had a beta deck for those tapes i figured i would try to work it into the mix -
Older models devices had anywhere from few lines memory to a full field, When the memory improved a full frame can be processed, and yes all TBC's are analog to digital converters except for the very old broadcast equipement from the 60's or the line delays in CRT TV's. Some are analog to digital to analog, Some are one way analog to digital.
Having smaller equipement keeps the place cooled and organized, Since you have access to those dump places keep an eye for a Sony J3-SDI or J30-SDI, They playback every SD Betacam format in both analog and digital small and large size cassettes in both NTSC and PAL, and it is the size of a small consumer VCR, this will saves you a ton of room and cabling since it outputs a very clean and stable digital SDI signal, All what you need is a one BNC cable and a SDI interface which I believe the decklink is capable of. -
this is all greek to me but this manual shows really detailed information about the tbc in the 2800 https://www.manualslib.com/manual/1130184/Sony-Pvw-2800.html?page=20#manual
