  1. I've had this problem with PotPlayer for a long time and I haven't found a solution to it yet so I could use some help.
When I open some files with PotPlayer it freezes and only plays the sound until it crashes and I have to close it and in the task manager.

Media Player Classic has no problem playing these files. I have the K-lite codec pack.

I uninstalled the 64bit version of PotPlayer and installed the 32bit version and it made no difference.

Also, since the latest update, my mouse cursor vanishes in the player, it doesn't matter if it's playing the media or not, the cursor just disappears when I move it on the player, everything works just fine but it's so annoying that the cursor disappears and I have to guess where it is! is there a fix for that?

    here's a shot of the information of the file I'm trying to open. if you need something more tell me;

  2. nevermind, I changed this thing and now it's playing the file! I have no idea what it does, I just know changing it fixed it!

  3. Similar problem here.

How do you open m4v files in PotPlayer? They are perfectly opened in Windows Media Player but PotPlayer crashes. No problem on other formats.

Use MediaInfo to find out what kind of video is in the M4V file. Download and install MediaInfo. Open one of the problem files with MediaInfo. Use View>Text to display a full report lfor the file then cut and paste that into a post.

Most computers can't decode HEVC video without using hardware-based decoding but it might be something else.

  5. I wrote M4V, by mistake.

One of them is MOV. MediaInfo reports "mp4v-20" codec identity. The other one is MKV. MediaInfo reports "V_MPEG4/MS/V3" codec identity.

PotPlayer's internal decoders have problem on these. "mp4v-20" never opens. "V_MPEG4/MS/V3" plays as 1 FPS. That's weird. Why cannot open old SD videos?

How to activate LAV Filters external decoder for these? The rest is good. I won't change my media player just for two formats.

And I have a modern GPU which has Ultra HD, 10 bit HEVC decoding support.

As far as I can remember, I haven't seen those codec IDs before. I don't know what filters PotPlayer is using to decode them or how to make it use LAV Filters instead.

"MP4V" only means it is some type of MPEG-4 elementary video stream. Many types of video are in the MPEG-4 family.

MediaInfo reported "mp4v-20" and "V_MPEG4/MS/V3" as the codec IDs for the video that would not play. I looked up those codec IDs. "mp4-20" indicates some type of MPEG-4 part-2 video. DivX and XVid are examples of MPEG-4 part-2 video but there are other proprietary versions. "V_MPEG4/MS/V3" means Microsoft MPEG4 V3 inside a Matroska container file. Microsoft has a decoder for it but I don't know if any non-Microsoft players can use it.

PotPlayer has a list of supported video codec IDs but yours are not on the list. I can't find a way to add a new type of video to the list. Maybe somebody else has a suggestion for a better way to approach your problem.

Potplayer and LAV both use DirectShow; if LAV Filters are installed and registered, Potplayer will automatically use them...
In Potplayer: Filter Control > Video Decoder select LAV from the drop-down lists...
Click Filter Management and click Scan. There may be other settings to consider, Potplayer can be a bit complex to configure.

I already did them. It is said that "MS MPEG-4 v3 codec is DivX3". I attached DivX videos to LAV Filters, but nothing changed.

Windows Media Player plays them, PotPlayer cannot.

I have a 7th Gen Intel CPU. I can even play 8K HEVC and 8K VP9 videos with 7680x3840 resolutions, but I cannot play those old 480p mp4v's in PotPlayer.

By the way, as the video renderer, use Built-in Direct3D 11 Video Renderer. You can play the best out of your PC... In my case, other renderers do not let 8K videos play smoothly. Do not use the recommended renderer option "automatic" or "Madshi-MadVR".
