  1. I have a very small test sample from my Matrox MXO2 that's captured in 10-bit uncompressed AVI. Supposedly it's YUY2 but I can't confirm. I'm having a hard time working with it. Right now I can only open it in VirtualDubMod, not VirtualDub. I was able to open it in VirtualDub2 but for some reason I can't anymore (video doesn't display). The problem is that when I was opening it in VirtualDub2 it would open as RGB888, not YUY2. When I inspect the file with MediaInfo, this is what it tells me:

    Format : AVI
    Format/Info : Audio Video Interleave
    File size : 41.7 MiB
    Duration : 1 s 535 ms
    Overall bit rate : 228 Mb/s
Writing application : Matrox DSX AVI file . Format: 6. Build: 1.0.0.451

    Video
    ID : 0
    Format : YUV
    Codec ID : M101
    Codec ID/Hint : Matrox
    Duration : 1 s 535 ms
    Bit rate : 224 Mb/s
    Width : 720 pixels
    Height : 486 pixels
    Display aspect ratio : 3:2
    Frame rate : 29.970 (30000/1001) FPS
    Standard : NTSC
    Color space : YUV
    Compression mode : Lossless
    Bits/(Pixel*Frame) : 21.332
    Stream size : 40.9 MiB (98%)

However, when I open it in VirtualDubMod, it does not tell me what colorspace it is. I want to save as 10-bit, but don't know how. In the meantime, I am saving as 8-bit Lagarith YUY2 but since I don't know what colorspace VirtualDubMod opened decoded the file in, I have no idea if did a YUV<->RGB conversion or not.

Can anybody open/edit/save this file in 10-bit YUY2 all the way through?

  2. The only method that worked for me is to remux it as .mkv using mkvtoolnix. After that you can use VDub2 or ffmpeg to transcode it in whatever codec you like.

  3. I have a few other M101 avi videos (8 bit and 10 bit) that don't give me any problems with virtualdub2 (one must use the ffmpeg video source filter), ffmpeg, and avisynth (ffvideosource and lwlibavvideosource). But I couldn't find anything that would read the video in post #1 until buzz1891 pointed out that mkvtoolnix can mux it into mkv. Once doing that all the above tools can read the mkv video -- returning 10 bit YUV 4:2:2, including virtualdub2.

Interestingly, if you remux from the mkv created by mkvtoolnix back to avi that new avi opens without any problems in virtualdub2. So it's not the codec that's causing the problem but something about the avi structure.

  4. Thank you for the responses. I downloaded the ffmpeg for VirtualDub (https://sourceforge.net/projects/virtualdubffmpeginputplugin/) and installed it. Now ffmpeg appears an an option to open video files. Unfortunately, I still cannot get VirtualDub2 to open the .mkv, either one I did myself with mkvtoolnix, or the one included in the post above. The video is just blank.
    What am I doing wrong?

  5. Why you try to use plugin, VDub2 supports *.mkv natively. The ffmpeg mentioned in my case means standalone executable, a console-app, not a plugin.

Sorry, I should have been more clear. When I use ffmpeg command line, I can successfully convert the m101 mkv to 10-bit yuv 422 ffv1. I can then play it fine with MPC-HC. However, for some reason, I still can't open it in VirtualDub2 to actually edit the capture losslessly.

I still can't edit this 10-bit file natively (i.e. in it's YUV422 form). VirtualDub2 is not opening the video, even with the ffmpeg plugin installed. Unless I there is a different version of the plugin or VDub2 that I am not aware of.

  7. The precedence of source filters in VirtualDub2 can very depending on the system. Force it to use the "ffmpeg : video" filter (included in the program) when you open the m101 mkv file:

I just tried that and same thing - doesn't open.

  9. Dunno, what's wrong, but I can encode .mkv to ffv1 .mov and can open the result in the VDub2 directly.
    Versions: ffmpeg 4.4.1 release, VDub2 44282/x64

Just to be sure -- you should open the video remuxed with mkvtoolnix (mkv), not the original AVI.

What does MediaInfo show about the mkv file? I get:

  11. The VDub2 I have is v44282/x64. I do not know what version my ffmpeg filter plugin is. That being said, can somebody please link me to the ffmpeg filter plugin that works with VDub2 (v44282/x64)?

Yes, I tried to open the mkv. Here's the MediaInfo for the MKV:

No. Because it's built into VirtualDub2, not installed separately. I'd remove the filter you installed. Maybe it's interfering somehow?

I don't see anything obviously different between your remux and mine. Except I used a much older version of mkvmergegui.

    I used VirtualDub2 version 44065. About a year old.

    [edit]
I just tried a remux with the latest portable version of mkvmergegui (64.0.0, 64 bit). VirtualDub2 was able to open the new mkv.

  13. I really appreciate all the responses.

I blew away my old VDub2 and reinstalled the latest version from this site. Did not install any additional plugins or anything else. Tried opening the .mkv via the FFMPEG:Video option. Same thing. No video.

  14. hmm works for me

VirtualDub2_44282 , both x86 and x64 work. I downloaded mkv from post#2. Just drop and drag . It opens with the caching input driver by default. Forcing ffmpeg:video in the drop down box also works

  15. Well thanks for trying. I don't know why I can't open in in VirtualDub2.

  16. I'm out of ideas too. I even tried opening the video with VirtualDub2 on another computer running Win 8.1 (64 bit) and a virtual machine running Win XP (32 bit). No problems.

  17. I just wiped my compter, did a fresh Windows re-install and now everything works fine. No idea what was wrong, but I'm glad I got it working.

Thanks to everyone for their help. I wouldn't have re-installed if I wasn't convinced it would work.

  18. Can't playback the files (.avi&.mkv) with ffmpeg/ffplay or open it with LWLibavSource or ffms2 in Vapoursynth here either.
Funny thing is that LWLibavVideoSource&FFVideoSource in Avisynth opes the .mkv file without a problem, for the .avi I get ' failed to get the video track. '
So this might be related to the used libav/ffmpeg version,...
