    Take a look at this shot from Cloverfield, wondering how much if any of the artillery is some kind of "theatrical" rounds i.e. glorified bottle rockets and flash powder, how much is added in after the fact with CGI.

    At around the :45 sec mark there's a rocket battery being fired. You can see the changing light levels, reflections off of the vehicles - it sure looks like some kind of actual combustion taking place. Obviously it's not actually being fired at a monster. If it's some kind of actual pyro projectiles what are the rounds being fired at or into? Seems it would be a huge fire hazard if it's a sound stage. What about toxicity of the smoke to the actors and crew?

    Or is every bit of it CGI?
