  1. Hello!

I have a 210p HEVC HDR Dolby Vision video file that I want to play on my SDR 1440p display. But for some reason it shows weird colors, lots of green and shades of purple:

I have searched for hours now, and have tried:
    - MPC-HC with MPC Video Renderer, no luck
    - MPC-HC with madVR, no luck
    - MPC-BE with Enhanced Video Renderer, no luck
    - MPC-BE with MPC Video Renderer, no luck
    - MPC-BE with madVR, no luck
    - VLC 3.x with OpenGL for windows

I understand that tone mapping should take place, but I can't seem to get it to work.

For MPC Video Renderer I had set it to convert to SDR, doesn't help.
Same for madVR: I tried to set up calibration with bt.709 or bt.2020 gamuts or leaving it disabled, combined with "tone map HDR using pixel shaders" option or "let madVR decide".

No matter what I do, I cannot get it to work.

    What options do I have?
    Thanks!

If only Dolby Vision is present, then there is currently no way to watch it on an SDR display and see the correct colors. Dolby Vision is a proprietary technology that uses dynamic HDR metadata and there is no software decoder available, so the display itself must have the ability to decode and display it.

You need a video that uses HDR10 or HLG to watch HDR content on an SDR display, plus a software player that supports the type of HDR being used. HLG and HDR10 are open-source technologies and use static HDR metadata. PC software players use tone-mapping to approximate HDR color on an SDR display using look-up tables (LUTs) or an algorithm to perform the conversion.

  3. Thanks! Yeah, that's what I actually managed to find in about 5 minutes after posting the question... ah rubber duck debugging.

It appears we both have the same problem. For me, this only happens sometimes, but not always, when I try to play video files saved on my laptop that are 2160p or above.

I have Lenovo Y700 4K laptop so I guess that is disappointing. So, was there some kind of solution? I am a full on noob so can't figure out myself what to do.

Also, any idea how to tell if a video file will give me this problem or now? So I know what files to avoid. thanks.
