  1. I often rip DVDs to MP4 on my hard disk.

I have been using HD Decryptor for a long time but it is now telling me to renew or buy. It is supposed to be free. I contacted DVDFab but they tell me it must be a new protection, but it still fails with old DVDs. Is there any way round this?

Also, Handbrake works on some DVDs but not all. I am prepared to pay for a ripper that works well but they all seem to be very expensive. Is there any software that anyone can recommend. Free would be even better.

I understand the warez rules in this froum but the software I mention is legally available.

  3. Thanks october. That works perfectly. I tried makemkv many years ago and it was rubbish. They have obviously been working on it.
Do you know what is best to convert mkv to mp4? My TV will not read mkv.

  4. I should add, I know there are sevral freebies that do this but I would like one that minimises loss of quality during the conversion.

MakeMkv puts the original mpeg-2 into the MKV file. To create the mp4, you have to convert the video
to H.264/AVC using Handbrake or similar
