Hey all,
tricky question for you all.
I have a NTSC video from the US, I'm in Australia, I have both a SONY and AKAI vhs player, both support ntsc -> pal and vice versa.
I am trying to capture this video so I can burn to vcd. when I watch it on TV, all works fine. when I go to capture from this video on both an ATI AIW 128Pro AGP & a DC30Pro, I get a v-hold problem. The image is constantly rolling over on it's self, I can change the mode from NTSC to PAL and the image will stop rolling but the picture is in black and white but perfect in every other way.
Any ideas ? is this macrovision ? I have a PAL macrovision stripper and it hasn't made a difference. do I need a NTSC one, or can I strip it out via software ?
Thanks in advance.

Hi, I am from Australia too. I don't think macrovision is the problem. Macrovision doesn't effect the video to computer capturing at all. It is only the video out of the card to the VHS be a problem. You will get nothing this way.
I have a small Panasonic multi-system TV having the same problem with the v-hold, the picture rolls for some reason. The problem was worse on NTSC and now fixed with a direct cable from the source instead using the microwave TV signal. The picture rolls again recently with received Australian TV via the VHS VCR. The VCR is old and this is the reason for the problem and will have to replace it. I don't know about the capturing on the computer V-HOLD problem, I don't have that problem.
Is your capture card and program set as AUTO for TV system? If so, try set the TV system as NTSC M for US TV. I hope is a help to you. -
Thanks for that info, yeh I've set everything to manual and auto, as I said, I can get it to play with out the scroll but only in black and white on the capture card. I can watch it normally on tv. it's only when I try to capture it via the pc that this problem occurs.
it's very annoying.... -
The v-hold + black/white problems only occur when you are playing an NTSC format video or file on a PAL system and vice versa. Sometimes you get just the v-hold problem, sometimes just the b/w problem, and at times, both.
You are able to correct the problem in video because you have a muti-system source (VHS) and a muti-system TV. However, when you capture, you get the problems you have described. If this is the case, using the same principle as watching TV, you should also set your capture parameters equivalent to the source.
This means that if your source VIDEO TAPE is NTSC, make sure to set your capture device to NTSC as well. Same goes with PAL. These are just the hard and fast rules. The settings need not be changed on the source (VHS Player) but on the capture device.
What capture software are you using ? If you describe this you can probably get better advise on settings. Try VirtualDub, it's small, easy to operate and you can get lots of advise on it.
Hope you get success on your capture !!!
