  1. Recently I've been getting these error messages for many reliable websites quite often. (see screenshots). If I click on the red circles, then I can go to the websites. So that is 2 additional clicks to go to many websites. Some websites, like mega.nz, or https://www.eff.org, I can't go to at all (see third screenshot). This problem occurs on the latest version (for my computer) of Google Chrome and Firefox. I tried installing Opera to go to mega.nz but that did not work. However, I was able to use Tor browser to go directly to mega.nz and https://www.eff.org. Tor browser however, takes about a minute to come up.
My question is: Can someone tell me why I can't go directly to many reliable websites with the usual browsers. And why can't I go at all to mega.nz or eff.org with the regular browsers?
And on something possibly related, I can't download ebooks from the public library anymore (see screenshot 4). I use Adobe Digital Editions
(ADE) and it cannot connect to their servers anymore to download the ebook. (Digital Editions could not connect to the fulfillment server. Please make sure you are connected to the internet). Possibly this phenomenon is related to the above problem with browsers not connecting properly.

  3. Open a command prompt, type each one at a time, hit enter, go to the next one:

    ipconfig /release
    ipconfig /renew
    ipconfig /flushdns
    ipconfig /registerdns

Question why Windows 7 cannot connect directly to many reliable website
The problem has nothing to do with Windows 7, the problem is named Google Chrome & Firefox.
Just get rid of the evilware, then the problem will disappear.

  7. Yup, happening on Win 10 also, using Firefox. But only on some sites. Check to see if site URL has https:// in the link.

I never had this issue on firefox unless the time or date was wrong.

  9. I tried the four commands from above sophisticles. The commands seemed to give a proper response on the command line, but it didn't solve the problem at all. I checked the time/date, no problem there. I've got two independent wifi, one wired At&t and a t-mobile hotspot, and both internet connections have the same problem. I think the problem is in the Windows 7 computer. I've had updates turned off for 10 years or so. I've heard that there were some Windows updates that allowed the computer to connect properly to new secure https protocol, and that not only includes browsers but more importantly, Adobe Digital Editions, which can't now connect to their servers to download ebooks. On those few websites that won't connect at all, I can use the Tor browser, but I can't solve the ebook problem.

  11. Is there any easy way to apply just the Windows 7 update that I need so I don't get these https warnings and also be able to download from secure server to get public library ebooks from Adobe Digital Editions software?

  12. Correction for post #7. It was Chrome on an old android tablet, not Firefox.

Yes. Search for Simplix UpdatePack 7 on e.g. Major Geeks or Softpedia.

  15. Ok, problem 100% solved.
    1) when going to reliable websites, like videohelp.com, (look at screenshot 1 of first post in this thread) I no longer get warning message in address bar that says "not secure" and https crossed out with red line
    2) I no longer get (see screenshot 2) warning, proceed to website (unsafe)
    3) I no longer am locked out of websites (see screenshot 3) such as mega.nz with message, "you cannot visit mega.nz right now because website uses HSTS"
    4) I no longer get error message when trying to download free public library books using software Adobe Digital Editions, "Digital Editions could not connect to the fulfillment server" (see screenshot 4).
The problem is caused by an outdated "security certificate", probably because I've had Windows 7 updates turned off for over 10 years, however I've been told some Windows 10 computers had this problem; probably not getting Windows updates for some reason. (The reason I have Windows update turned off is that the updates will eventually seriously slow down this Windows 7 netbook with small memory and small atom processor. Since Microsoft engineers don't use netbooks with small memory and small atom processor, they don't realize and don't care about the negative effect of Windows updates.)
The solution to fix above 4 problems is to download and install the latest security certificate update.
    See here:
    https://techglimpse.com/dst-root-ca-x3-expired-certificate-error/
In case above website doesn't work, I've copied the information to below Microsoft Word document. Also, I've attached necessary security certificate (in rar because I couldn't upload .der file).
As a check, I looked at the list of certificates (as shown how to do in above website) and it appears to be added (see below screenshot, red circle).

  16. I always thought the 'security certificate' was done at the host of the web site. That's the way I did it when I was a webmaster. That is the way they get the https: indication.

MS dropped support for Win7, I don't think you can download updates anymore.

Yes, you can: Simplix UpdatePack 7 and/or Bypass Windows 7 Extended Security Updates Eligibility.
