    Hi, I'm looking to cut small clips from a large video, so it's something very simple. Do you know any basic editors that would be suitable for this?

    I'd try Avidemux, for Linux I'd recommend the appimage, that's what I use.

    It's pretty simple and has the advantage that it doesn't enforce a profile for output so you don't have to re encode to edit and it'll keep the original resolution.

    Keep in mind that if you're talking about x264 or x265 video (.mp4 or .mkv files usually have this), you can only cut on key frames (ie. I-frames) with this editor. I don't know of any free editors that don't have this limitation.
