There is very old material, 21yrs old, in ancient AV codecs. This is not possible to play in Samsung "smart" tv, because it support only 264 and 265.
So I would like to convert it to modern formats, add subtitles and cover. What bitrate will be okey for AV in AVC and AC3?Code:Video ID : 0 Format : MPEG-4 Visual Format settings : BVOP1 Format settings, BVOP : 1 Format settings, QPel : No Format settings, GMC : No warppoints Format settings, Matrix : Default (H.263) Muxing mode : Packed bitstream Codec ID : DX50 Codec ID/Hint : DivX 5 Duration : 1 h 12 min Bit rate : 1 947 kb/s Nominal bit rate : 4 854 kb/s Width : 720 pixels Height : 400 pixels Display aspect ratio : 3:2 Original display aspect ratio : 16:9 Frame rate : 25.000 FPS Color space : YUV Chroma subsampling : 4:2:0 Bit depth : 8 bits Scan type : Progressive Compression mode : Lossy Bits/(Pixel*Frame) : 0.270 Stream size : 1 007 MiB (81%) Writing library : DivX 6.8.5 (UTC 2009-08-20) Audio #1 ID : 1 Format : MPEG Audio Format version : Version 1 Format profile : Layer 3 Format settings : Dual mono Codec ID : 55 Codec ID/Hint : MP3 Duration : 1 h 12 min Bit rate mode : Constant Bit rate : 192 kb/s Channel(s) : 2 channels Sampling rate : 44.1 kHz Frame rate : 38.281 FPS (1152 SPF) Compression mode : Lossy Stream size : 99.4 MiB (8%) Alignment : Split across interleaves Interleave, duration : 40 ms (1.00 video frame) Interleave, preload duration : 500 ms Writing library : LAME3.96r Encoding settings : -m d -V 4 -q 2 -lowpass 19.5 -b 192 Audio #2 ID : 2 Format : MPEG Audio Format version : Version 1 Format profile : Layer 3 Format settings : Joint stereo Codec ID : 55 Codec ID/Hint : MP3 Duration : 1 h 12 min Bit rate mode : Constant Bit rate : 256 kb/s Channel(s) : 2 channels Sampling rate : 48.0 kHz Compression mode : Lossy Stream size : 132 MiB (11%) Alignment : Split across interleaves Interleave, duration : 40 ms (1.00 video frame) Interleave, preload duration : 500 ms

output container: mp4 (or mkv if supported by your tv)
audios: aac (or keep the original mp3 in mkv)
video: x264 or x265, single pass crf mode would be recommended (ex: x264 crf=18, higher crf to compress more)
Note that the video uses non square pixels (so you might need to correct the Aspect Ratio). -
Use clever FFmpeg-GUI.
Load your divx movie, click main, click convert video stream, click continue, set all like in the picture, click convert.

If done, click multiplex, the new avc video stream is shown in green, leave all streams checked except the old mpeg4 stream, select mp4 as container, click multiplex. Done.

Keeping the original mp3 in mkv is best as it avoids any recompression artifacts.
aac (not ac3) is more compatible and more efficient when recompressing.
The container can have a DAR flag to say correct the AR, but the player must be able to handle it, otherwise the video will play distorted.
It can be set with ffmpeg or other tools.
The alternative is to resize to a square pixels resolution with the correct display AR.
Width : 720 pixels
Height : 400 pixels
Display aspect ratio : 3:2
Original display aspect ratio : 16:9
You can certainly also embed subs (and cover image) in mkv. -
Okey, I made it in AVC CRF 17 and AAC 320+224. Video bitrate is 1685kbps - isn't it to low?

Modern codecs are more efficient, but on the other hand there is always a penalty when re-encoding (+worse with different codecs).
Original bitrate is 1947kb/s,
you can go to a lower crf if you wish (lossless is crf=0). But the filesize increases and at some point, you will not be able to tell the difference.
Use the preset slow or slower for max quality.
aac 192kbps is probably fine for stereo.
