  1. Hello all.

I downloaded (via IDM) a 4k 60p video from this channel:

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PZrjDRCozbQ

I tried to play it with VLC player, but I it wouldn't play. The screen would go crazy!

Could you please download that video and let me know if you can play it?

I want to see if I have a software issue or is my hardware not adequate for doe playing 4k 60p files.

    This is my computer's specs:

    Ram: 12 GB
    VGA: 2 Gb
    CPU: Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-4720HQ CPU @ 2.60GHz 2.59 GHz

If this is hardware problem, what has to change? This is a laptop, though.

If VLC is not powerful enough to play 4k 60 videos, what player should I use?

I can play ordinary 4K videos (not 60) and also 2k 60 videos just fine.

I won't download the file because it will take hours to download 5.44GB with my slow broadband Internet service. However, FireDM allowed me to see that the download would be a WebM file so I can make an educated guess.

WebM typically uses VP9 for 4K. Your i7-4720HQ processor provides Intel HD graphics 4600 and your post doesn't mention any other GPU. Intel HD graphics 4600 can't decode VP9 using Quick Sync Video, which means the 2160p60 video must be decoded with software using the CPU alone. That is a heavy lift for a CPU.

Unfortunately, you don't have enough computer horsepower for a VP9 60 file. It plays fine on my XPS13 laptop with Intel UHD 620 graphics.
It's not important the problem be solved, only that the blame for the mistake is assigned correctly

  5. I don't know what you mean by "screen would go crazy" but the "best" video there is HDR and won't look right without an HDR monitor.

    Try specifying the non-HDR version.

    Yes.

I had Intel HD 4600 Graphics on my old Haswell desktop. QSV could decode VP8 and 8-bit HEVC but that processor generation's iGPUs are too old to have QSV support for VP9 and 10-bit HEVC or HDR pass-through.

I have Intel UHD 630 graphics on my two current desktops. QSV can decode VP9, AV1, and 10-bit HEVC. Plus there's support for HDR pass-through for HDR10 and Dolby Vision.

[Edit]It turns out that I misremembered. Intel UHD 630 QSV doesn't support AV1 decoding. Support for AV1 decoding is available with Tiger Lake, Rocket Lake, and Alder Lake. The chart on the Wikipedia page for QSV looks like a fairly good reference for comparing the QSV features for various Intel processor families.

I can't find an Intel reference to confirm it but that Wikipedia page says Haswell processors QSV can't decode VP8 or 8-bit HEVC either. So, it looks like I'm wrong there too. My memory just ain't what it used to be.

Actually, my laptop has 2 graphics card. One is Intel. The other is a 2gb Nvidia GTX 960M.

So, is there a way I can put the more powerful video card to use for these videos?

Still not going to play that video, GTX960M supports H.264, VC1, MPEG2 1080p video decoder

  9. Actually, when I download the video via Internet Download Manager, I can play this resolution just fine:

    336 webm 2560x1440 60 | 3.05GiB 16258k https | vp9.2 16258k 1440p60 HDR, webm_dash

    This is still vp9.2.

Although, when you download with IDM, you get a MKV file not webm.

I assume there is no way I can change my graphics card, is there?

Maybe your CPU is powerful enough to decode VP9.2 at 1440p60 using software but not VP9.2 at 2160p60. Also, VLC can tone-map HDR video to simulate HDR on a non-HDR display.

Laptop graphics cards are usually soldered in place and not removable.

Both the graphics card and the CPU are problematic. Neither the processor's iGPU nor the discrete graphics card have the ability to decode VP9.2 and the processor itself isn't powerful enough to decode 2160p60 VP9.2 using software.

I don't think it's possible using that laptop. You would need a newer, more capable computer.

Laptops usually have half the horsepower for the same cost of desktop computers so unless you need a laptop best to get a desktop.

I downloaded the 854x480 version and put it up on my LG TV. Appears to be HDR HLG.
Even at that low-res, it looks pretty good

What's the point of downloading the 4k version if it's beyond the native screen resolution?
    Might as well download 1080p

An HDMI 1.4 connection, the best HDMI connection available from computers of that era, won't support 2160p output above 30fps anyway.

I still think if there is a way the software part can be optimized, my laptop can play 4k 60fps.

Some of the best minds (myself excluded) here on Videohelp have already explained, it won't play it. Time to bury the thread.

It's funny you should say that. I actually found a way to make the NVIDIA my primary GPU processor and now my laptop plays 4k 60FPS smoothly!

I realized NVIDIA wasn't being used before and I changed that.

Yes, but your display isn't 4k so you are not actually getting 4k, you're playing a lower resolution. The max resolution of your GTX is H.264, VC1, MPEG2 1080p video decoder...

When I get a new laptop (after Christmas) I'll try it. Based on the specs, in theory, the laptop I want can play that 8K video, although on a regular 1080p display. The Intel i5-1135G7 processor's Iris Xe Graphics can decode AV1 video and provides DisplayPort 1.4, which supports 8K video at 60fps. However, it only has 8GB of RAM so that could be an insurmountable limitation.

Here you go, here's an 8k sample - 2mb, I was not able to play it on my Dell XPS with Intel UHD 620, I get audio but no video.

But no computer in the world can play it offline! I hope software developers optimize these players so that they can play 8k smoothly.

The problem I'm running into is in actually downloading an 8k video. Yes, I can play them on Youtube but they are downsampled, if I try to download them they are downsampled.
