I've heard that Windows XP is the best OS to capture on and that Windows 10 is bad. Most people don't have old enough hardware and motherboards to support Windows XP as Windows XP is from 20 years ago. You'd have a hard time installing Vista either. Is 7 old enough? I'm not interested in perfection. I just want everything to have no compatibility issues with hardware and software.

Win7 is fine. (don't know where you read that XP is best since some sw is no longer supported beyond that)
In fact I use Win7. Never upgraded beyond it. -
There is nothing inherent about an OS that makes it bad or good for capturing, or most tasks for that matter. What matters is are there drivers for the hardware you want to use and does software exist to make use of the hardware.

I use Windows 10 for all my captures without any issue.
In general, the OS choice depends on the capture card, its drivers and the capture software.

Capturing on a Windows 11 machine, no issues, I'm doing digital captures via HDMI > USB 3.1, I don't convert VHS anymore.
It's not important the problem be solved, only that the blame for the mistake is assigned correctly
