    Hi all,

    I have old V8 tapes expecting ripping them to computer myself.

    About 20 years ago I captured video with Sony Video 8 Handycam CCD-F380E and then I ripped the video from V8 tapes to VHS tapes. Afterwards I only played the VHS tapes on VHS player connected to a CRT TV set. Then I never touched the orinial V8 tapes.

    Two years ago both my VHS tape player and Sony Video 8 Handycam were broken unable to work, leaving me no device to play both VHS tapes and V8 tapes. Recently I have the idea sending the tapes to shops specialized ripping VHS/V8 tapes on DVD.

    1) I sent a VHS tape to Shop-1 to rip it on DVD. After 5 days Shop-1 returned the VHS tape to me, saying the tape unable to work and charged me an inspection fee.

    2) Then I sent the same VHS tape to Shop-2 for ripping it on DVD. After a week I collected the DVD from Shop-2 and found parts of the video not clear/not sharp. Then I sent the original V8 tape to Shop-2 requesting to rip it on DVD. After 3 days Shop-2 returned me the V8 tape, saying the tape unable to turn and charged me an inspection fee. The V8 tape was broken by Shop-2.

    3) Then I sent another VHS tape to Shop-3 for ripping it on DVD. On advertisement Shop-3 claims specialized ripping VHS/V8 tape on DVD and the service charge is almost double of the service charge of Shop-2 above. However part of the video on DVD is still unclear/not sharp.

    4) About 10 days ago I contacted another shop, say Shop-4, claiming specialised ripping VHS/V8 tapes on DVD. I sent Shop-4 an email requesting ripping on lossless video codecs or at least low loss codecs like Prores. Then Shop-4 returned me an email reply saying they'll send me a reply on my request in 2 days. Now it is almost a week no reply has been received by me from Shop-4.

    So leaving behind the only solution for me is to rip the orginial V8 tapes direct to computer myself.

    I wonder what device I need, an old Sony Video 8 Handycam or a V8 tape player, additional to USB-Live2
    Analog Video Digitizer
    USB-Live2: USB video capture, display and DVD burning for your Windows PC
    https://www.hauppauge.com/pages/products/data_usblive2.html.

    The TV system here is PAL. I'm running Linux Ubuntu 20.04 OS here.

    Please advise. Thanks in advance.

    Why did you start a new topic about this ? Surely the core info was in your earlier topic.

    But I see a problem which you did not AFAIK mention previously. Most capture devices such as the Hauppauge require Windows. Most capture software - the ones we would suggest require Windows. I know nothing about Linux but I do not see any capture software listed on this site for this OS - even if you could get a device to work with it.

  3. From the Hauppauge page:
    https://www.hauppauge.com/pages/products/data_usblive2.html
    For Linux too
    Hauppauge provides a PPA for Ubuntu to make the driver installation easier. Note: only a Linux driver is provided. We do not provide a Linux application with USB-Live2. See www.hauppauge.com/linux
    https://www.hauppauge.com/pages/support/support_linux.html

    But I can't help with this. I am on W10 only.

    Regarding other gear you would need see your former thread.

    Hi,

    Thanks for your advice.

    My previous posting was under the heading "How to fix blurry video on Avidemux". Sorry for that.

    I have Windows10 Home and Pro running here as well. It is not a problem to me.

    USB-Live2 also works in Linux

    USB-Live2 in Linux

    Now the most critical problem to me is the hardware to run V8 tape

    Hi,

    Thanks for your advice and links. It is not a problem to me. I'm running both Windows 10 and Linux here.

    I also came from Windows about 15 years ago, then to BSD and then to Unix and now Linux. The first Linux OS used by me was Red Head. Later I built Linux OS myself, Linux from Scratch, which is a very rigid Linux OS almost unable to attack.

    I'm expecting to get some advice which gear will be more suitable to me, an old Sony Video 8 Handycam or a V8 tape player ?

    Regards

    Hauppauge USB Live-2 is ok. However, even if I ignore which device is appropriate for your tapes, I recommend a line TBC, either one inside the Camera/VCR or one inside a DVD recorder used in passthrough mode.

    Thanks for your advice.

    a line TBC

    Whether you meant;
    A 'timebase corrector' or 'time base corrector' -- often simply referred to as a 'TBC' -- is a device that corrects the signal and/or image quality of video tapes, especially VHS and S-VHS tapes

    Camera/VCR or one inside a DVD recorder

    Whether refers to following device or similar "
    Panasonic DMR-EZ37VK DVD-Recorder/VCR Combo with ATSC Tuner Black
    https://www.porterelectronics.com/panasonic-dmr-ez37vk-dvd-recorder-vcr-combo-with-atsc-tuner-black/

    Please advise. Thanks

    Suggested S-VHS VCRs: Any one of these will do quite nicely at clean playback of both VHS and S-VHS tapes:
    Code:
        JVC 9600+ models (NTSC): HR-S9911U, JVC HR-S9900U, JVC HR-S9800U, JVC HR-S9600U

        JVC SR “Professional” models (NTSC): JVC SR-V10U, JVC SR-V101US
        Panasonic AG-1980P + rebadges/clones — also suggested as best for VHS-C and S-VHS-C tapes)
        JVC 8900+ models (PAL): JVC HR-S8965EK
        JVC 7900+ models (PAL): JVC HR-S7965EK
        JVC SR “Professional” series: JVC SR-V10E
        Panasonic NV-FS200 (PAL version of NTSC 1980) + rebadges/clones
    Whether VCRs refers to V8 tape?

    I was referring to a lineTBC. Explanation here: http://www.digitalfaq.com/forum/video-restore/2251-tbc-time-base.html

    Sometimes (lordsmurf would say always) a frameTBC is also needed.

    In term of DVD recorder to be used in passthrough mode very common are the Panasonic DMR-ES10 o DMR-ES15. Others may work as well, do not know about the one you listed.

    You have few samples of captures with the Hauppauge USB Live-2 (and VCR with lineTBC) here https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCMsKcwn9Yh1MmNAs7I8nu4g

    No VCRs can playback V8 tapes. There are some stand-alone V8 players but they are very rare so your only viable option is a camcorder that will accept the tapes you have.

    Whilst a line TBC is suggested it may not be required and it may be wiser to get the camcorder and the capture device first and see what quality you achieve.

    But what really concerns me is that these tapes are being broken by others and the same could happen to you. That is they are not in such a good condition as you think they are. But there is only one sure way to find out.

    BTW that dvd/vcr combi is totally unsuitable for you. The ATSC tuner is the give-away. That is an NTSC system. Not for a PAL source.

    Thanks. Good suggestion.

    One question - whether all camcorder can play V8 tape? Any model I have to search for?

    Whilst a line TBC is suggested it may not be required and it may be wiser to get the camcorder and the capture device first and see what quality you achieve.
    Advice noted. I'll search camcorder first.

    But what really concerns me is that these tapes are being broken by others and the same could happen to you. That is they are not in such a good condition as you think they are. But there is only one sure way to find out.
    I see your point. I have checked 2 V8 tapes as follow;
    1) Using a screw-driver to unloose the tape on one side
    2) Then using the screw-driver to tighten the tape on another side.
    It works and won't break to tape. It is impossible to rotate the wheel on one side pulling the tape from another side. I'll break the tape.

    If the tape player rotates the wheel in one side pulling the tape and simultaneously unloose the tape on another side. It won't break the tape.

    BTW that dvd/vcr combi is totally unsuitable for you. The ATSC tuner is the give-away. That is an NTSC system. Not for a PAL source.
    Advice noted with thanks

    I would suggest a Hi8 camcorder with line TBC/DNR and S-Video output jack with Stereo audio RCA jacks, Or a D8 that plays back analog tapes with the output jacks mentioned above, With a D8 camcorder on hand there is a third option and that is to use the firewire port (iLink) to capture the DV stream converted from the analog tape. You will be looking for a Sony brand for all the features mentioned above, don't bother with other brands. I know Hi8/D8 camcorders in general can be expensive especially in Europe but you can get most of your money back if you choose to sell it after your project is done.

    Don't worry about a DVD recorder in passthrough now until you see the outcome from the camcorder, Metal tapes used by the 8mm format preserve a good signal integrity compared to VHS chrome tapes.

    For the broken tape, I see a scenario here that the shop didn't tell you about. If a cassette does not spin and then the tape breaks it is a good indication of tape shed or mold in your tapes, The layers of tape tend to stick to each other and seize the reels, You will need to take care of this before further damage occurs, there are videos on video99.co.uk youtube channel about this subject and he is a good candidate to handle your project if you happen to live close by.

    Hi8 camcorders should be backward compatable with Video8 tapes - I own a Sony Handycam CCD-TRV238E which states that it accepts Video8 (although I have not tested only used Hi8)

    And, of course, it must be a PAL camcorder

    There are also Digital8 camcorders and some, but not all, can playback Video8 tapes. Check out this page.

    I use a TR7000E which can play back Video8, Hi8 and D8 and output all of them as DV over Firewire. The only way IMHO of retaining the quality of the original tapes.

    DV is a fair compromise option especially for PAL. Of course I guess his system does not natively support ieee1394 and would require an add-on card (instead of the Hauppauge)

    The minus is that support is fickle under Windows10.

    But better quality is achievable as lossless capture and the Hauppauge supports that.

    Can I use it for ripping video on computer?

    It is not easy for me asking the seller those technical information. It is an used device. I'm interested to buy a brand new camrecorder if it can capture and play back on Video8, Hi8, D8 and USB drive

    MiniDV is NOT the same as Digital8. Your tapes will NOT play on a MiniDV camcorder.

    DV is a codec used by consumer formats D8, miniDV and DVCAM, When you hear the word capturing into DV that means a D8 camcorder is converting an anlog V8/Hi8 or an external source such as a VCR to digital DV codec, D8 and miniDV tapes are transfered not captured as they are already in digital format.

    The eBay camcorder you linked above is from the late 80's to early 90's, Don't get those old ones, they tend to be heavily used, Get the later small ones from late 90's to early 2000's that have all the capturing features needed, You are going to have to do a lot of researching and checking user manuals online for each camcorder you kind of like on eBay, most sellers don't know what they are selling. The list DB83 posted above is a good start but I'm pretty sure there are more candidate camcorders than those mentioned.

    In your situation, I would forget about Digital8 and just look for a Hi8 camcorder. Of course, as noted, if a Digital8 compatable with Video8 comes available you could consider it. But you are going to pay much more and for something you might not need.

    The first listing is not an analog camera.

    The second one - read the comments and it confirms that, as previously written, a Hi8 camcorder will playback Video8 tapes. However......

    I suspect that particular model is for NTSC so you must look for a PAL model. The 'E' as part of the model no is the big clue here for PAL.

    Hi DB83

    Just found follow;

    Sony Handycam CCD-TRV67E PAL Hi8 PAL Video Camera Recorder
    https://www.ebay.com/itm/384390585483?hash=item597f76dc8b:g:UkgAAOSwBsZhPfaz

    It is PAL system. Where can I find Sony V8 tape working on it?

    Besides where can I find Charger voltage. Here the Voltage is 200V

    Edit

    Also I found;

    https://picclick.com/Sony-Handycam-CCD-TRV67E-Hi8-Video-8-8mm-Tape-264257542042.html

    The 2nd listing confirms what I have written too many times now. Hi8 camcorders playback Video8 tapes. I am not going to keep repeating this.

    As for the power part, the standard adapter works from 100 - 240 volts. What is more critical is the plug but the cable is detachable. Do you not have the adapter from your original camcorder ?

    Oh, sorry.

    I have sent an email to the seller of the 2nd listing via ebay, requesting for further clarification as follows;
    1) The said camcorder is still in good condition, able to capture video and play back as well
    2) The play-back output is PAL system
    3) What is the voltage of charger, 220v or 110v. The voltage in my area is 220 volts AC, 50Hz.

    I'm now searching for the "USB-Live 2 Analog Video Digitizer and Video Capture Device". It is also available in ebay;
    https://www.ebay.com/itm/363572355661?_trkparms=amclksrc%3DITM%26aid%3D1110006%26algo%...Cclp%3A2047675

    As for the power part, the standard adapter works from 100 - 240 volts. What is more critical is the plug but the cable is detachable. Do you not have the adapter from your original camcorder ?
    I suppose the adapter of my original camcorder is still working. I just checked its output voltage - DC 15.4v. I don't know whether the connection cable is the same?

    Edit
    ====
    Alternatively I can buy USB-Live2 direct from Hauppauge

    USB-Live2
    Video Capture over USB 2.0
    https://www.hauppauge.com/pages/webstore2/webstore_usblive2.html

    but it is USB 2.0 not USB 3.0

    Regards

    Hi all,

    I sent an email via Ebay to the seller of the second hand "hand Sony Handycam CCD-TRV67E Hi8 /Video 8 8mm Tape PAL Camcorder" mentioned on my positing #27 above;

    Sony Handycam CCD-TRV67E Hi8 /Video 8 8mm Tape PAL Camcorder
    https://picclick.com/Sony-Handycam-CCD-TRV67E-Hi8-Video-8-8mm-Tape-264257542042.html

    The seller replied me that the device was not under their offer. Then I wrote them a reply requesting them to clarify it with Ebay. Up to now there is no reply from this seller.

    Then I sent another email to the second seller via Ebay offering the second hand
    "Sony Handycam CCD-TRV67E PAL Hi8 PAL Video Camera Recorder" mentioned on my same posting;

    Sony Handycam CCD-TRV67E PAL Hi8 PAL Video Camera Recorder
    https://www.ebay.com/itm/384390585483?hash=item597f76dc8b:g:UkgAAOSwBsZhPfaz

    requesting them to confirm the camcorder working in good condition, able to capture and to play back video etc. Also up to now there was no reply from the second seller.

    Before placing order to Ebay, it would be better to clarify the condition of camcorder direct with the respective seller first.
