Hi everyone,
I just retrieved 100+ VHS that I need to digitalize.
I acquired a VHS & DVD Recorder (toshiba rd-xv48dt) to retrieve the VHS (family movies) on a digital support (VHS -> DVD)
I retrieve a TS_VIDEO folder that I later convert to a .mpg file with "MPEG Streamclip", in the process, MPEG Streamclip also fix timecode breaks -> indeed the videos are often corrupt, VLC has trouble playing them.
Example of an MPEG File:

At home I have the Shield 2019 Pro and I love the AI Upscaling feature.
So I decided to check how I could do the same for my VHS.
I saw several tools available (AviSynth & Topaz).
Is AviSynth still recommended over Topaz? What would you recommend for my use case?
Did I use a correct (the best?) way to retrieve the VHS on a digital format?
Many thanks for any help

A few words.
Using a VHS/DVD recorder is not the best method but of all you require are dvds then it possibly can work for you. The 'time-code breaks' puzzle me since the transfer should allow for them. So answer the following.
The are two ways of doing the transfer and only one is guaranteed to play in all dvd players. These are called DVD-Video Mode and DVD-Video Recording Mode. It is a common mistake in thinking that due to the name that DVD-Video Recording Mode is the way to go. But it is the exact opposite. In fact back in the day I initially made the same mistake and also required Mpeg Stream Clip to extract the files. Check your units settings and ensure that DVD-Video Mode is selected. And to be sure upload a screen grab of the Video_TS folder showing the files.
Of course if you really want to upscale then you little choice but to extract the mpeg files. But the upscale will mean a re-encode and you have good quality files at present with the net result that you will lose real quality in the process. I am not the person to answer how you should upscale.
The 'Best' method to create a digital file from VHS is to use a capture device and lossless files straight to your PC. There are hundreds of topics on here of the devices, software and methods so I will not repeat any of these here.
