Does is make sense to capture at a higher resolution than the source
material?

8mm has 240 vertical lines. (Sony 8XR mode has 280 lines)
Hi8 seems to have 400 lines.
Digital8 is the Sony proprietary way to save into DV format, that has 520 lines.

Hi!
Always capture in full resolution. By resizing later on the noise gets reduced (because of the averageing)
The vertical resolution of all formats is fixed to 576 ( for PAL), only the horizontal resolution depends on the format, just as Fred wrote.
