all you should need is a twisted pair ethernet cable and an ethernet card in both comps.

Plug them in and search online for "twisted pair networking"

You could also buy one of those Wi-Fi wireless networks, but they r dumb unless you have a laptop as Wi-Fi is 50 megs.

If you use new modern cards, you can get 100meg Fast Ethernet from the cable.

  3. you need a hub I think
also in networking settings your workgroup has to be the same name as his workgroup in order to share files with him

yes you need a hub (OR) you can get a crossover cable. Basically if you take a straight cat 5 cable and connect your two pcs, your connecting the recieve wires and transmitt wires together. For all of you video and audiofiles, it would be like connecting a the inputs of all your av equipment together, when in actuallity you need to connect the input to one output. A hub will do this for you or you can buy a crossover cable cheaper. Only problem with a crossover is that you can only hook two pcs up at a time.

Spend the cash for a Cable-Router.

Its easier and worth the extra cash over the hub.

I have been down the home-network road, and now wish I had spent the extra 30 bucks sooner, rather than wait...

  8. this really isn't that difficult depending on what OS on each machine and what kind of network you want to set up
i realize you have all the correct equipment and all that. it's all hooked up right (like you can screw that up) and you have dhcp set on the client machine.
now if the dhcp thing sounds weird then you should probably enable that.

if you want to do it for real i can baby step you thru the whole thing on AOL instant messager.

    my screen name is GROUCHYTIM

i'm more than happy to help ya out.
