If all your doing is copying VHS/Hi8/etc. family videos to DVD and have no use for customized or fancy menu systems, just go with a set-top DVD recorder. I recommend the Panasonic E20 DVD-R/RAM recorder. I have had first-hand experience with it and its ease of use and image/video encoding features and quality are superb! Check it out at --

I would recommend the Pioneer A03 or A04. These writers are well known for producing highly compatable DVD recordings. Also the bundled software that comes with it is very good. (PrimoDVD and MyDVD)

  4. If you decide to go the PC drive route, I agree with dmonty. You can't go wrong with a Pioneer A04 DVD-R/W drive.
