  1. What is the best codec library currently available - and still maintained regularly - for Windows 8? I read about one named K-Lite. How does that compare to others?

Is there any easy way to NOT have the codec library replace the default codecs under Windows? I would prefer to have the codec installer only install codecs for which Windows offers no support.

  2. For playback just use a player with built in codecs. For encoding install only the codecs you need/want. There's no reason to install codec packs.

A codec pack is a good way to hose the OS, and have to reinstall it.
