I've made a video using my Gopro Hero camera. I'm trying to upload a video to YouTube but it keeps failing. I can't work out why.
Has anyone got any suggestions?

I don't use this software but I have a question. Are you trying to upload the video directly from the software? If so, try rendering to an mp4 and upload to YouTube directly.
-
Thanks for the reply. Yes, I have tried that before and it was successful. However, I've also done the same with the current video but it has rendered it to an MP4 file of 16 GB. God knows how long that will take to upload to YouTube. Is there any way to reduce the file size?

Filesize = runlength * bitrate
How much bitrate you require will depend on many factors >> e.g fast movement requires more than little motion. Larger frame sizes will also require more bitrate. -
Yes, that makes perfect sense. I've taken the video on a Go Pro camera and it's taking nearly 3 hours to upload a 16 GB video.

Thanks, saving the video to my PC and then uploading it to YouTube worked a treat. Mind you, took nearly 3 hours.

Glad that you got the video uploaded.
I see that the resolution is 640x360. What is the resolution of the original footage from the camera? -
That vid was originally uploaded as 16 gb ?
YT has re-encoded it (it always does that) but the only display option is 640*360. And the file is only 221 mb -
DB83, that's what I noticed as well. That's why I asked for the resolution of the camera footage.
-
Yes. I did not see your reply when I posted mine.
My friend, all things being equal something is basically wrong with your workflow.
As well as the camera resolution - I am not familiar with GoPro's but I thought they these were 720p or bigger- may I suggest, as a means to assist, you download/install a small program called mediainfo. Load the original video that you uploaded (hope you still have it) and select View >> Text. Copy/Paste the report that then appears as your reply. -
I don't know what YT video you guys are looking at but here I see a 1920x1080P, 60FPS video of 53 minutes duration. 16gb upload could be correct.

@ironside, to reduce the upload time you need to reduce the file size by reducing the video's bitrate. To what, is the big question. I'm not familiar with NCH, but you should be able to load your video then export it at reduced bitrate. For that video, I'd suggest trying a bitrate of around 10,000kb/sec. That should still give you a good video quality on YT without taking so long to upload (being a reduced file size of about 4gb).
As DB83 suggested, if you could give us the output from the Mediainfo report, we could advise more accurately what bitrate would be suitable.
For future GoPro videos, you may be able to set the camera settings to a lower bitrate/quality so your videos aren't so large. -
@ Alwyn, I can only assume YouTube was still processing the HD version of the upload when I clicked on the above link; I definitely saw the resolution was 640*360. Now it's FullHD as you have stated.
-
@Brainiac, yes, sorry, probably being a bit harsh. It does take some time for the HD versions to appear.
-
Yeah. I looked some 30 mins after the advice of the link and I only saw 360p.
Even so, 16 gb for 53 mins of 1080p/60, even with the occasional fast motion in this vid is MUCH to large.
It's down to the OP now if he wants some guidance on this.
Edit:
360p is not even an option now.
The 1080p/60 file is 2.18 gb and dropping frames like fun.Last edited by DB83; 27th Aug 2021 at 01:55. Reason: addit info

In Reddit, someone posted a question about large file sizes from their Gopro H4S. Mind you, this was 7 years ago. Here are parts of the responses:
GoPro produces large files. That's just the way it is. Deal with it
The files are so large for a very simple reason, you are filming at 60FPS in 1080p. More frames=more data. The GoPro records at about 30mbps at those settings (at least with my H4B). You might also be shooting with protune on. If you wish to have smaller files and willing to sacrifice quality then drop the frame rate to 30, make sure protune is off. If that still isn't enough then re-encode to a lower bitrate. Mind you it won't look as good, and you can't do the same slow-mo effects if you do.
