Specifically, it only happens on locally recorded ZOOM meeting videos and no other videos behave like this. It looks fine in software mode, but it looks a lot less contrasty, which is not ideal too.

Sounds liek a codec compatibility issue, but I don't know the codec used here. That can happen with many players, the mpv devs actually recommend turning OFF hardware decoding for this reason.

does it help to have these info?

I prefer not to waste cpu cycles (through software mode) and also have the better image quality (without the pixelation of cos) of the hardware mode..

Can you provide a sample video

  6. Maybe you can point out exactly where the problem is in that video. I only took a quick look (I didn't individually look at 1200+ frames) but didn't notice any problems.

And what player are you using? Hardware decoding? Hardware decoding may not support 11 reference frames.

I gave the sample screengrab so you don't have to watch the whole video.

When you enable HW acceleration, this pixelation happens. When disabled, the pixelation disappears but the contrast is now poorer. I want to retain HW acceleration.

  8. I tried your video with several different players. Only potplayer screws up. So your easy fix is to stop using potplayer. The properties of the video that might be causing playback problems are the mod2 frame height and the 11 reference frames. Stick with mod4 frame sizes and 4 reference frames.

the mod2/11 is set when encoding and not during playback decoding right? I have no control since Zoom does the encoding..

    Yes.

Then there's probably nothing you can do except complain to the makers of potplayer.
