  1. SONY HDR-HC1 camera. It plays the tape fine and HDVSplit sees it but when I capture it, the file remains at 0K.

  2. Looks like I have to get a JVC 720p HDV deck to capture 720p and 480p footage.

Only two consumer camcorders that supported 720p I believe and they are Canon, So you would need those or a proffesional camcorder/deck such as the Sony HVR-M15U (NTSC only) or HVR-M15AU (PAL/NTSC).

sorry but that's wrong. jvc was the only company to make 720p HDV cams starting with the HD1 moving on to the HD100, HD110, and HD200

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HDV - "JVC was the only manufacturer of HDV 720p camcorders."

No, JVC was not the only one, maybe the first one but not the only, I've had Sony camcrders that did 720p, and now I have a deck that supports it. I got that mixed with 1080p where only Canon HV20/HV30 consumer camcorders supported 1080p.
