Why the hell do people use Flask? I've been using TMPGEnc for a long time, made a lot of VCD's XVCD's and SVCD's, and always been amazed at the high quality. So just for shits and giggles, I made a VCD, SVCD and XVCD with Flask, with the Panasonic plugin and bbMPEG, and the quality is a sad joke compared to TMPGEnc. So why the hell do some people still use it? Are they dumb? Are they so busy having sex with their sisters they can't get with the program?

Obviously you've done something wrong.
FlaskMPEG with TMPGEnc offers better quality than DVD2AVI with TMPGEnc (though it is minor).
FlaskMPEG with Panasonic looks better than TMPGEnc to some eyes.
I'm not going to debate whether Panasonic or TMPGEnc offers better quality at VCD bitrates again. This has been discussed to death and visual quality is obviously subjective.

What is your source material thebach?
Flask is used primarily by those who rip DVD's if you are capturing camcorder footage or TV input you would not use Flask but rather a standalone encoder like TMPGEnc or Panasonic or LSX.
It seems that you may be making a completely worthless comparison.
BTW your contribution certainly was worthless..... -
Flask is very good at resizing, cropping, letterboxing,
deinterlacing, and converting dvd to avi.
In my experience, the quality of video out of bbmpeg
depends a lot on which version one uses, and maybe even
more on the little-used "advanced settings" which pretty
much have to be tweaked to get decent output-- but
you CAN get very good output from it.
You can also very easily frameserve to tmpg from flask
by using avisynth.
Fortunately, there seem to be very few people on these
forums who post flames, call names, or make rude
statements.
Now excuse me, I think I hear my sister calling... -
Hey I'm not casting any stones, I've had sex with my sister and it was great, plus, I barely made it out of high school. But I don't get the quality with Flask that I do with TMPGEnc. This is from DVD source. I am gonna try some other settings in Flask and see what happens

do you know anything about vcds at all !!! your obviously using flask without the secret recipe !!! one clue 4 u
PLUG-Ins. -
LISTEN MATE ,,,I USE FLASK ALL THE TIME NOT WITH THE LSX NOT WITH PANASONIC , I CAN CONVERT A MOVIE IN ABOUT 2 AND A HALF HOURS , HAVE IT ON CD IN ABOUT 2HRS 45 MAX, I DONT HAVE NO PROBLEM WITH IT
IN FACT I WOULD DEFINATELY RECOMEND IT ....COZ 9 OUT OF 10 RIPPERS PREFER IT......... ITS NOT FLASK ...ITS THE PLUGIN YOU USE -
ICAN ONLY AGREE 100% WITH BIGTREE. HE OBVIOUSLY HAS READ THE SAME RECIPE BOOK AS ME ! FLASK 4EVER MAN !!!

Calm down people.
thebach, Flask doesn't do the encoding, the plug-in does. As I've stated in my above post, you can actually use TMPGEnc WITH FlaskMPEG and FlaskMPEG probably provides a minor quality improvement over DVD2AVI.
What you are seeing is probably a difference between TMPGEnc and Panasonic or LSX or bbMPEG.
TMPGEnc and Panasonic are probably the best MPEG-1 encoders at VCD bitrates -- but they encode differently. TMPGEnc is sharper but blockier while Panasonic is softer, smoother and much less blocky. What looks better is subjective, but there are two camps on this issue.
Note, this is for standard VCDs only. For XVCDs or SVCDs, TMPGEnc obviously has an advantage over Panasonic.
If you want to compare the quality of Flask over DVD2AVI, you will have to not use a plug-in... that is, encode a short piece of video from the same DVD source to uncompressed AVI. Undoubted, you will see that both yields excellent quality.
