Microsoft confirms Windows 11 22H2 breaks Windows Hello.
In today's episode of "What Windows 11 22H2 breaks this time",🤭
we have the broken Windows Hello authentication system.
According to the latest update from the software giant, users could experience problems with Windows Hello sign-in methods, such as face recognition, fingerprint, or regular PIN.

I bought this Windows 11 mini desktop PC:
https://www.amazon.ca/Beelink-Mini-Computer-Bluetooth-Ethernet/dp/B0B3MQRLKX/ref=sr_1_...05&sr=1-4&th=1
I also bought this wireless keyboard with trackpad:

So far I am not finding Windows 11 as bad as I feared it would be. I do a few things I need to sort out to get more functionality out of it. I disabled Microsoft Teams and signed out of that Widget thing on the side. I am going to launch a topic to to hopefully get some advice on some specific things. I haven't taxed the machine much yet but I do want to see what it can do.Last edited by Tom Saurus; 23rd Nov 2022 at 16:17.

Covered previously in this thread, but
https://www.oo-software.com/en/shutup10
&
https://github.com/Open-Shell/Open-Shell-Menu
both proved very desirable for 10. I don't see where support for 11 is mentioned anywhere, but if they are still applicable, I'd say get and use them. When in Las Vegas, don't miss the Pinball Hall of Fame Museum http://www.pinballmuseum.org/ -- with over 150 tables from 6+ decades of this quintessentially American art form. -
Thank you for your advice. I will give some thought to those programs. Actually there are some things I like about Windows 11. Of course Windows 7 is my comfort zone. I am interested in stopping Microsoft Windows from monitoring and logging what I do. So these programs you suggested may prove very useful.

It is good thing I have the Windows 11 mini desktop computer. I just updated Chrome on my Windows 7 desktop computer and I got a message saying that this would be the last update as they are not supporting Windows 7 anymore when it comes to updates for their browser.
I saw "Windows 11 22H2" as the only Windows Update I don't have and after seeing the post about it above I selected "pause updates for five weeks". The Windows 11 machine is so quick it is hard to keep up with what it is doing. -
I used to be a regular reader of the "Ask Woody" column, where he issued warnings about which updates wrought what havoc. This was being proactive, for any machines under my care. Then I would often pause accordingly, as you said. But 7 gave way to 10, and our ability to decline or delay specific updates became seriously limited. You also needed to have non-base-level Win editions. The top "Enterprise" level, and in particular the "Long Term Release Schedule" editions (or whatever the right nomenclature for that is . . . ) retained the most in update-rejection-options or stability status. My expectation is that erosion of user choices only increases under Win 11.

Microsoft fixes Windows 11 22H2 file copy performance hit.
Well, it shouldn't be broken, to begin with.

The USB 3.0 speed is nice. It was a nice bonus to have USB 3.0 slots on this mini desktop computer. I glad there is information that the posters here have been kind enough to let us know about to try to avoid these troublesome Windows updates that sometimes cause more harm then they are worth. It is nice that they try to remedy the situation but with the money Microsoft has why can't they thoroughly test such updates before they are released. Their consumer's devices should not be guinea pigs.
-
The mini desktop computer is still working well. I continue to delay the Windows 11 22H2 update. I like the Waterfox Browser and the Startpage search engine is rather nice.

No matter what µ$0ft does, Notepad has always sucked and it will keep sucking forever. 💀 😑

Notepad is fine for what it was intended for, just doing text messages, wasn't meant for editing.

Don't know about you but i found notepad very useful for saving shopping lists and and other reminders,i would never use an editor for that.Back in the old days i used an editor for other stuff.

Microsoft reportedly shows full-screen Windows 11 upgrade ads with two 'yes' buttons.
It appears that Microsoft is getting more aggressive with Windows 11 promos. A Reddit user (the post is now removed) has published a photo of their Windows 10 computer with a full-screen Windows 11 ad offering to upgrade to the latest operating system. And in typical Microsoft fashion, available options are as head-scratching as it gets: two buttons, and both mean "I agree."

When it was coming out, 10 was supposed to be the "Final" Windows ? No more numerical increase designations, but possibly moving to a subscription model ? Either that didn't last very long, or I'm misremembering.
When 7 was about to give way to 10, there was a utility applet for blocking their upgrade nag "notifications." (Which wasn't reliant on the HOSTS file, since MS tends to ignore that.) A good chance they adapted from this, so it may not be quite so easy this time. But hopefully someone (like Shut-Up 10) will roll out a solution for this, to avoid user oversights or accidents, for those who decline to be strong-armed.
I still check the 'Ask Woody' site for any bad tidings re the periodic W-10 updates. It had been the case that you could delay these for a period of time, renewed a week at a time -- with 10 Pro or above -- but not refuse them altogether. That is a feature I've made use of. [Only "Enterprise" level or the long term development channel provided for more extensive user control over this.] But quite recently, I stumbled across mention of another utility that I think seemed to claim having a solution for selective update refusal. Not Shut-Up 10, which I've been using since I started with 10. Can't recall what it was offhand, will have to run that down. For some reason, the name Steve Gibson keeps popping up in my mind. Had not heard any reference to him since the Spinrite and 'Shields Up' days. When in Las Vegas, don't miss the Pinball Hall of Fame Museum http://www.pinballmuseum.org/ -- with over 150 tables from 6+ decades of this quintessentially American art form. -
You thinking of InControl? https://grc.com/incontrol.htm
Gibson had Never10 to put off being pushed into upgrading to Windows 10 and InControl for more control over Windows 10 updates.Last edited by HemLok; 5th Feb 2023 at 19:01.

Thanks -- that's almost certainly the one. This guy is a true hero for Windows users. Just peruse:

Deary me.
Mocr$soft seem to have been disappointing these last sets of years, their idea of exciting new features for customers includes stuff like
new animations, rounded corners, tabs, "modern code", tablet-optimized Taskbar (rack off, I have a PC), search icon settings, better accent color support, tabs in Notepad, icons had a rounded focus,
you know, like have been around elsewhere for years and years and/or are essentially usefullness-free trivia in the scheme of things. -
Plenty Good Enough (XP, 7) just won't do: applies to nearly all software, gotta still sell licenses for (supposedly) "new & improved", even if that is not actually the case -- or even to the contrary. Sort of like the shark that must keep moving or drown ?

Affected PCs weren’t able to upgrade this time, but it’s the second in less than a year that Microsoft has made this mistake.
