I had heard about this AVIDemux but I wonder if this could work as an alternative to Virtualdub2? I really like using Virtualdub2 but I am looking for somethng that is somewhat similar to Windows Movie Maker but more advanced and "current" yet easy-to-use for editing. I had heard some good things about this editor but I want to know more about it. I am looking for a backup editor where I can edit my gameplay videos as they are not exactly high quality.

Virtualdub was so good and loved because it was so fast, easy, immediate to use. Sadly.. it is (currently) dead.

AVIDemux (I'm not using it in some years) is a quite a different beast..

Maybe it WOULD be good if it WOULD be stable .. but at the time I used it (on a Windows platform).. it was all but stable.

So.. try it and see how it performs with your system.. and if it may be any good for you.

  4. - Virtualdub2 isn't dead.
    - Virtualdub is frame-based and does capture, but otherwise Avidemux can be considered a cross-platform alternative.
    - Current Avidemux is perfectly stable and has been for while (supported versions are 64 bit only). Older versions may have been more hit and miss.
    - Avidemux does of course have limitations and issues.
    - Avidemux is open to code contributions, many improvements could be made quite easily to bring the Avidemux GUI up to date and improve features.
    - Avidemux and Virtualdub aren't really alternatives to Windows Movie Maker. They aren't multitrack NLE clip editors. They do support project scripting.
    - Avidemux is good for fast lossless cutting on keyframes or basic cutting and filtering. The GUI is very simple. Avidemux has good input file support and uses ffmpeg encoders.

Virtualdub2 is great (I still use it) but it's more like a "maintenance" release than a software under active development.

  6. While I like AviDemux, the reality is that it could be so much more. In many ways AviDemux us more capable than Virtualdub2 but here are 2 areas where Virtualdub2 is superior to AviDemux:

    1) SIMD support, AviDemux only makes use of up to SSSE3 whereas Virtualdub2 makes use of up to AVX-512.

    2) Format support, AviDemux does not support Y4M, ProRes, JPEG2000 (I only tried with MXF encapsulated), but Virtualdub2 does.

The AviDemux people could learn a think or two from the Virtualdub2 folks.

I guess it looks like I may have to stick Virtualdub2 until I can find something that I can use for video clips. Some of the higher quality sutff requeires a higher quality source or so I was told.

  8. Why is your source poor quality ?

If it's because it's already compressed, avoiding unecessary recompression will yield the best quality results.

I do use lossless or lossy codecs to record some of my clips. Looks like I know what I am uninstalling.

  10. - Virtualdub/Avidemux aren't the right tools for putting together complex edits/cuts (a few cuts/copy/paste is ok).
    - For actual video quality, start with a good source and avoid recompressing with lossy codecs, final render when you are done editing.

Okay. I do not need anything too complex....yet. I may try AVIDemux in the future just to see what it can do for me.
