I've seen subtitles show up one word at a time, adding to the text... what tools can do that?
Try StreamFab Downloader and download from Netflix, Amazon, Youtube! Or Try DVDFab and copy Blu-rays! or rip iTunes movies!

If yer going with the flow, yer going down hill.

What your seeing most likely is automated generation of speech as it's being said, check google on this procedure,it's not very accurate in that words are misspelled.

the webvtt .vtt subtitle format (used by youtube) allows adding a word at a time to a subtitle.
-
I've seen it hard coded, as someone speaks, the words appear one at a time across the screen, really cool.

Here's an example, of sorts... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-0f0MDB5Yjw

You have to enable subtitles/CC in youtube to see that, some subtitles are not generate by speech but those videos are few.

The subtitles are hard coded into the video. I'm asking how to do this.

They are not hard coded since you can turn them off,the subs are generated by a speech recognition program that google uses.

In the OP's link, the youtube subtitles are actually also hardcoded.
-
Just checked it and the burning subs appeared after awhile but they were burned(Re-encoded) in so they weren't generated at the time.

The issue with .vtt subtitles is that most video players only currently have basic support for it and will ignore features like word by word.
Chrome has a Live caption option for videos in English (in accessibility settings). It's a realtime offline tool and results aren't as good as the youtube sutbtitler. -
Any SRT editor will let you do it manually.
Code:1 00:00:01,000 --> 00:00:1.500 {\an1}This 2 00:00:01,500 --> 00:00:2.000 {\an1}This subtitle 3 00:00:02,000 --> 00:00:2.500 {\an1}This subtitle should 4 00:00:02,500 --> 00:00:3.000 {\an1}This subtitle should appear 5 00:00:03,000 --> 00:00:3.500 {\an1}This subtitle should appear word 6 00:00:03,500 --> 00:00:4.000 {\an1}This subtitle should appear word by 7 00:00:04,000 --> 00:00:4.500 {\an1}This subtitle should appear word by word.

@jagabo I'll look at that, thanks.

other positioning tags:
{\an1} bottom, left
{\an2} bottom, centered
{\an3} bottom, right
{\an4} mid, left
{\an5} mid, centered
{\an6} mid, right
{\an7} top, left
{\an8} top, centered
{\an9} top, right
alternate positioning tags supported by some older players:
{\a1} bottom, left
{\a2} bottom, center
{\a3} bottom, right
{\a9} mid, left
{\a10} mid, center
{\a11} mid, right
{\a4} top, left
{\a6} top, center
{\a7} top, right
For the word-at-a-time purpose the "left" tags are probably useful for left-to-right languages. The "right" tags for right-to-left languages.Last edited by jagabo; 12th Apr 2021 at 20:23.

Hi, I have compiled an auto vtt-srt converter for this issue. Please find the attachment.
Once double click, it will automatically convert all the vtt subtitle into srt, thus this srt is re-editable.Last edited by lty2004008; 7th May 2022 at 14:31.

I would be careful with that file:
https://www.virustotal.com/gui/file/9b7e14e63f7371ec6d840b89d3894cb08d882fd246f7e07c11...4774?nocache=1
Even though it might be false positives. -
Definitely it's always good to stay cautious. I am a researcher in audio-visual interpreting studies. I met the same problem and sent an email to the developer of PotPlayer (so far PotPlayer is the only local player which is able to display .vtt subtitles). However, it will display the entire sentence and then styling the words, using one colour to cover another. As per the developer of PotPlayer replied, he simply refused my request of possibly adding an option of "disable displaying the remaining part of one sentence", he said:"I said I don't want to~ So never ask this question again~"
Therefore, I compiled this tool based on this post. It is wrote by Python. Again, you can stay cautious and try it in a sandbox to examine if it is virus or not.
Here I attached a .srt file, it is the converted subtitle of https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LkYB931iUjc
