  1. I just purchased a Hauppauge "USB-Live2" capture device. The instructions say that I need to go to the website, to download the software. However, I wish to capture using VirtualDub, and save to a lossless ".avi" format (Lagarith). The Hauppauge instructions claim that the files will come the ".ts" format.

So, which drivers do I need to install, to work with VirtualDub and Lagarith?

  2. As a side note, I am using VirtualDub2, on a Windows-10, 64-bit laptop. I should also note that I am asking this question before attempting any downloads and installs---hopefully, to avoid headaches.

When I acquired mine some years ago, the device came with a disk containing the driver and WinTV software (Version 7)

Now I do understand that WinTV (Version 8) is now an optional download but the driver ? And I do not think you can even download this software without proving you have a valid device. And it certainly would not run.

The .ts recording does refer to captures with either Hauppauge Capture or WinTV. VirtualDub (it is suggested to use the original not vdub2 for capture) will be in avi.

  4. Oh, I have the device and the key code---not a problem. It's all new, in the box. I am just wondering what I should download, and what I should not (or if there is even an option). Which version of vDub to you recommend, and is it still available, and compatible with Win 10?

Just install the most recent 1.10.4 - yes it is now 7 years old. I can not vouch for Win10 which is not the most capture-friendly OS. But it should be fine.

So maybe you now have to get the driver as well from the download package at Hauppauge. Rather a large download if you just want the driver.

Yet the text on this download page suggests that there should be a driver in the box

The download will update the driver.

  6. Thank you for that. I found the driver that I needed from that link. I have installed the driver, and VirtualDub recognizes the device. I have yet to try a capture. It's getting late, and I will have to mess with that setup tomorrow.

By the way, what is the difference between VDub2 and VDub 1.10.4? I have yet to mess with that, though I have previously done a couple captures with VDub2, using a cheap "Dazzle"device.

As a side note, I am using VirtualDub2
I use AmarecTV for capturing (sometimes GraphStudioNext with my own graph).

If you prefere VirtualDub use version 1.9.11, not VD2 (lordsmurf docet ).

I do not use VirtualDub because in my case it gives asynchronous audio at the end of the capture (1hour/2hours, delay not constant).
I suspect that its engine was designed for a time when the audio was captured with a diffent device than the capture
card, that imo explains all the options it has: I was not able to set-up them for proper a capture. I hope you'll succeed.

Always check that there are no dropped or inserted frames.
Once done, please post a sample of your capture with your comments, I'd like to see the results!

No idea. I am simply conveying what I have read in these hallowed pages.

I have not tried vdub2 for capture yet I am more than happy with usb-live2 >> vdub >> huffyuv/lagarith

Sure that there are other programs - Amerec was mentioned and DScaler should also work. Vdub, for the uninitiated, can be a PITA to set up. But the end results can be worth the effort.

But do not discount the Hauppuage capture programs. Depending on your needs they may be all you require. And when I need a quick 'n dirty capture (sometimes filtered through a ADVC) and especially if I require PAL60 WinTV ticks all the boxes.
