Hello,
A buddy lent me his box of Hi-8 tapes to archive but my Digital 8 cam doesn't recognize most of them. Does this mean the said tapes were recorded on an analog Hi-8 cam? Wouldn't the D8 be backwards compatible? So far I'm just viewing these in the camera; haven't even connected to PC via Firewire.
Does this mean I'll have to buy a standard Hi-8 cam or Walkman tape deck?

Not all D8 camcorders can playback analog tapes, only certain models, You either need a Hi8 camcorder or a D8 camcorder capable of playing back analog tapes.

Thank you for your help. I had no idea only certain D8 cams would play analog tapes. Oddly enough today I just received a second D8 cam, and this model does play analog tapes (Sony DCR-TRV350). I bought a few cams to use as players to copy/transfer.
