Some years ago I removed the file type from a couple of videos to prevent young prying eyes from viewing them on our network drive.
With those young prying eyes now left home, I wanted to be able to view the videos again ( originally taken with a digital camera...cant remember which one ) and tried to change the file types back to what I thought they originally were ( .avi ).

However nothing seems to recognise them even after I assigned them to VLC as the default player.

Is there a tool I can use to detect what the original file type was, so I can reassign the correct one ?

    Thanks
    I should say I am a windows 10 user.

  3. Yes, MediaInfo will show the container info.

But most media players are very good at determining the container even when misnamed. If you add .AVI as an extension most media players would be able to play the files. So it's likely there's something else wrong.
