This is my first post. Please be kind.

Like so many, I have started digitizing my home movie collection (beginning with the DVD pile) which are then streamed through my PLEX server.
I have a fast PC which is hooked into my home network
My Samsung TV runs the PLEX app and is also wired into my home network.

I have noticed that some of my DVD rips are buffering every few minutes. (Note: I don’t have buffering issues with anything else besides my personal Rips)

Can someone tell me where I am creating the issues.

Here are the steps I am taking.

    1. MakeMKV to MKV file (I understand I could stop here)
I have then tried this and have found buffering issues.

    2. Handbrake with direct conversion from MKV to MP4.

I am looking for the highest quality since the movies will be on a dedicated drive on my home network.

What is occurring which is causing the buffering issues?

    Excellent!
So it is NOT how I ripped the file, but rather PLEX settings.

I have half of the rips in MKV and half in MP4.

I will be placing movies on USB to stream in my Honda Pilot.
Any idea which format is most comparable with the that type of situation?

I hear MP4 is most accepted.

mp4 is a more accepted format as not everything can play mkv - https://www.reddit.com/r/PleX/comments/2t9kbr/mkv_vs_mp4/

  5. First, note that MP4 and MKV are containers -- different ways of organizing multiple video, audio, and other streams within a file. Both can contain a variety of codecs (different methods of compressing audio and video). You need to figure out what containers and codecs are acceptable to your car's player. My guess is it will be h.264 (aka AVC) video and AAC audio within an MP4 container.

This is a lot more confusing that putting a dvd in the drive and then letting MakeMKV do its magic.
I am learning that some videos play direct while others transcode.
I thought all MP4 were alike.

I have the following software available to me
    1. MakeMKV
    2. Handbrake
    3. MKVToolNix
    4. FormatFactory

So I need to figure out what goes in the container and how to set it up.
    Is there a “Best” format?

It all my videos have buffer challenges so I wonder what it is about this one.

what kind of player do you have in your Honda pilot ??
you may need to format the USB thumb drive to FAT32 for it to properly work
    in your car.

  8. Hey guys!
There are two broad causes for the vast majority of buffering issues when streaming content in a Plex app: The network connection can’t support the requested stream or the content can’t be transcoded fast enough for the stream. Checking both of these is fairly straightforward. You’ll want to check your network connection and streaming speed first as you should make sure it’s set appropriately regardless. You can check out everything on this website: https://support.plex.tv/articles/201575036-why-is-my-video-stream-buffering/.
