Hello people, this is fpmpaolo from Italy...so sorry for my bad english.

I would like to restore & improve some old videos from the 80's.
Years ago I transferred videos from old VHS to DVD using a DVD Recorder. I don't remember the rig I used, but they were low budget from eBay.
Original videos were recorded in Video8, then recorded in VHS.

Obviously VHS to DVD was not a good idea but...How can I improve image quality?

I have DVD files (so .ifo, .bup, .VOD) so...what should I do?

Any help will be appreciated...ciao grazie!

    Samples needed.

    Step 1 = extract video.

  3. Get the original Video8 tapes if you can. The transfer to VHS was a BIG mistake. The transfer to DVD probably introduced fewer problems.

Smurf is right. No one can help you without seeing 15-20 seconds from video that is closest to the original tapes as possible.

No way to get the original Video8 tapes.

Back in the days, my father used to record videos, then transfer to VHS via our VHS Recorder (Philips 4-head if I remember well).

So I had all these 240 minutes VHS I transferred to DVD via DVD Recorder.

    I only have DVD now.

I will upload some samples ASAP.

    Thanks for answering

  5. Even without seeing them, the video is going to be very fuzzy. There is no way to generate new detail. The best you can hope for is contrast and color correction along with dropout removal, if your tapes have lots of "comets."

What do you mean with "comets"? Talking about my old dead relatives?
If so, yes. I would like to make a better image quality just to watch them ...

    Le comete.

Like (usually whitish) noise from dropouts.

Here's a page with common tape problems, the first example is comets.

I can't comment of the software used, other than it is expensive for home use.

Grazie for the link. Most of the videos I have transferred from Video8 to VHS suffer from "Exessive Tape Noise", some "Tape Banding", some "Transverse Tape Damage".
I will encode some minutes of the first videos I transferred to DVD and I will upload it.

Hello people...I uploaded a couple of minutes here

    See post below

    Thanks for watching & helping.

Last year I also uploaded some VHS to DVD rips, old videos from my home town. I tried to find the masters, but it was impossible.
    it's a shame...

I would like to use Film9 and / or Shotcut...I think they can be useful for my projects...and they're also free!

Don't upload to youtube, upload the files here, youtube always re-encode video files so its better to directly upload the original video files here, you can upload up to 500 mbytes

    Here you are.
Recorded via VLC from the DVDs I made years ago.
Though the first video is 2/3 years older than the second, picture seems better...

Do not rerecord it but cut it direct from the file with something like Mpg2Cut2 or Avidemux ...
I think VLC may reencode it ..it's not really an editor
