I was given this thread talking about the GOP settings in Handbrake:

but I don't see where to actually *change* the setting in the GUI. Or are they talking from the command line?

gops don't have anything at all to do with the quality of the video. open gops are used to reduce the size of the video file by a tiny amount, but at the expense of editing. closed gops are always preferred for editing. if you are producing end user video just use the defaults.

I was told that Handbrake creates very long GOPs which slow down seeking and initial playing, especially with HEVC files because they take lots of CPU to decode.

I was told that a smaller GOP will help me for a specific project I am working on. The video editor I'm using works better with smaller GOPs.

  4. You specify the GOP size in the Extra Options box. Enter "keyint=60" (without the quotes) or whatever value you want. I don't know if it's the same for all codecs but that works for x264, x265, QSV h.264 and QSV h.265. You may also want to change keyint_min, "keyint=60:keyint_min=10".
