    My cable settop box has a usb recording feature was wondering if there was any way to play these files. What kind of encryption is this.

    It looks .ts to me, .dat is just a bunch of system files, VLC and MPC-HC play .ts files with no problems.

    This ts is encryted and you will have no luck to open it outside your box.

    The box has HDMI output ? perhaps a HDMI audio extractor as passthrough can be used.... google for user experiences for the correct one.
